I know that LOOKS bad at face value, but it's actually just a kinda weird statistical quirk. It comes from the fact that only one-third of the Senate is up for reelection at any one time; so that's 33 seats, and it just so happens that like 21 of those seats this time around were being defended by incumbent Dems. Meaning that in order for there to be no seat change whatsoever, Dems would have needed to win the "popular vote" by 2 to 1.

For this reason, talking about the "popular vote" in the context of the Senate race makes no sense. I honestly have no idea why people are trying to do that.

BTW in 2020 - again, by chance - most of the Senate seats up for grabs will be Republican seats, with Dems only having to defend a dozen or so. And a lot of those GOP seats are in districts that could easily swing, unlike this year's. This gives Dems a very real potential advantage - with a strong enough push Dems could get a president AND the Senate in 2020.

Votes are still being counted in Georgia for the Gov. race, and Brian "Mein" Kemp has a lead of less than 100,000. At this point Abrams' only hope is that the final count results in a runoff. In my congressional district the Democrats actually ran a candidate for the first time in 6 years. It did not matter much, though, the Democratic challenger did as little as possible, and we are sending back one of Nunes' most unabashed sycophants. (This guy is a former church pastor who likes to bemoan that the US is losing its Christian foundation and is losing its way while simultaneously praising and supporting Pres. Trump as some sort of perverse Messiah.)

On the plus side, the 6th may have been flipped to a Democrat. There will be a runoff for Sec. of State, but that is likely to go to the Republicans.

For local races it all went as expected. My local House rep went Democrat, but the local Senate seat went convincingly Republican. It looks like little will change in the legislative branch. Most of the House and Senate seats in Georgia were uncontested.

To paraphrase Jack Nicholson, this state needs an enema.

Maybe there will be a pitch and feathers parade for him.

I would like to say 'what an asshole' but that would be an assault to every other asshole in the world.

I am happy with tonight's result. Winning the Senate tonight would've been some kind of wonderfully delirious fever-dream, but what Dems DID achieve was not some kind of mere consolation prize. Dems have re-established the intended constitutional check against executive power; the DNC-controlled House can freely investigate Trump and his conspirators, put an end to the GOP's rubber-stamping Trump's policies while stifling debate and analysis, and force all legislation into the sunlight once again. This is a TREMENDOUS victory and an important positive step in bringing the country back from the precipice.
I believe democrats also picked up about 4 governorships. This will be important in 2020 when the census redistricting is going on.

Oh god no

Make somebody else the Speaker please. We can't keep pretending we can afford to "be the adult in the room" like the GOP's bad faith and nasty rhetoric is just some harmless tantrum and they'll stop it if we just don't give them attention. We need a wartime general.
She's not the adult in the room, she's the grandmother. In fact in her victory speech she brought her grandkids on stage. Pelosi is 78 years old. Another one of the old fogeys who need to make way for new blood. Look at the two democratic women who were elected who are under 30.

We (Dems) didn't regain the governorship here in the Northeastern Boonies of America known as New Hampshire, but we've just gone all D's in the U.S. House and Senate again (3 women!).

At the state level, the Blues are really shaking things up, with a good chance to take majorities in both the House and Senate here. If that happens...I'll be living in a Democratically-controlled state. I'm all tingly.
Yeah, I saw it got called for Sununununununu. My sympathies. Is he as bad as his dad?
