Former Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Colin Powell has endorsed Democratic former United States Vice President Joe Biden, becoming the first important Republican to publicly back President Donald Trump's rival ahead of November's election.

Powell, who led the US military during the 1991 Gulf War in Iraq under then-Republican President George HW Bush and later led the Department of State under President George W Bush, said Trump has "drifted away" from the US Constitution and posed a danger to the country and its democracy.

"I cannot in any way support President Trump this year," Powell, who did not vote for the Republican president in 2016, told CNN. Asked if he would vote for Biden, he added: "I will be voting for him."

"We are in a turning point," Powell said, blasting Republican senators for not standing up to Trump.

"He lies about things. And he gets away with it because people will not hold him accountable."

Former Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis and other retired officers have condemned Trump in recent days.

"Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people, does not even pretend to try. Instead, he tries to divide us," Mattis said.

Trump is fuming about that:

Overall 38% approve of the way Trump is handling the presidency, while 57% disapprove. That's his worst approval rating since January 2019, and roughly on par with approval ratings for Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush at this point in their reelection years. Both went on to lose the presidency after one term.

In the race for the White House, among registered voters, Trump stands 14 points behind Biden, who officially secured enough delegates to win the Democratic nomination in CNN's delegate estimate on Saturday. The 41% who say they back the President is the lowest in CNN's tracking on this question back to April 2019, and Biden's 55% support is his highest mark yet.

I was kinda hoping it would be Georgia that put him over the top (our primary is Tuesday), but it was Guam. Good for them.
Just as well he got the delegates first, it would seem.
I hope this is the Republicans tipping their hand too early so that steps can be taken to counter this for November.

Local news has lots of stories about voting problems, although 1.4 million people did absentee ballots already. That's 2/3 as many people as voted in total in the 2016 primary. Normally absentees are like 1/8 of the total. Although the polls officially close at 7pm, anyone in line by then can still vote, which means some polling places will stay open several hours more. It will be late tonight before the vote results are in.

It's not just R's messing around. The average age of poll workers is 70 in normal times (they tend to be retired, and available to work on a Tuesday). But they are an at-risk demographic for the virus, and a lot of them chose not to work this time. We also have new voting machines this year, so people are less familiar with them, and they are not allowing too many people at a time in the polling places. So the lines are stupidly slow and long.

I knew this would happen, so I did the vote by mail thing last month. So did a lot of people.

As usual, on the wrong side of the issue and has to "evolve."

What you wanna do in politics is pick a slogan that is guaranteed to 100% energize the opposition and even scare the pee out of some of your supporters.

Like, say, "defund all the police." It's really even better than, "take away all the guns" or "I'm a Socialist." :cheer:
