He can't fight it on the basis of a booming economy, or his handling of the pandemic, or his record, so he desperately needs something to rally his base and a frightened white public -- riots and angry black people is probably about as good as he get without starting a war.

Well, it's 160 years later, for starters. And we have the internet and mass media, whether for good or ill, and they can be used for both. I'd like to think that there are enough people who see the manipulation and won't fall for it. And there are those who agree, of course. They were always there, ticking timebombs, and he came along willing to help them explode. I have to hope the firmer can counteract the latter.

Its more like, unlike 160 years ago when there was more division by region, now its much more cities vs rural areas. So, its not going to be two countries fighting over if they are one country or two countries, but pretty much along ideological lines. That's my reading of it, anyway.
