I was thinking about reopening things, and how it could best be done in an ideal world. I mean, right now is definitely not the right time to open everything in America, but you know, people are stupid.

According to this blog post, from a professional immunologist, the main things that cause risk for starting a corona cluster are the size of the space you are in, the number of people there, what they are doing (singing and exercise generates more particles in the air), and how long people are there.

So maybe we should determine whether it's safe for an establishment to reopen by looking at their square footage, and the square footage of the rooms people will spend time in. Massive stores like Wal Mart and the average grocery store in my area present low risk, because they are massive, but the corner bodega is too small, so maybe don't let the bodega reopen? Then again, if the bodega can show that people spend less time in a bodega than in wal mart, then maybe allow the bodega to open?

Ideally, there should be a reopening function, that takes into account square footage, average time spent there, average population in the establishment, and increased aerobic activity into account, and then spits out a yes or no answer. Time spent in a store, average population, and aerobic activity levels are difficult to know, though, so maybe just go by square footage and review the other factors qualitatively?

For stores that are too small to reopen by square footage alone, maybe they can still operate, but customers can't enter. So they could do things like curbside drop off and pick up for the local vacuum repair shop, or maybe restaurants could set up an outdoor food court on some public property that is surrounded by small restaurants.

Gyms definitely have to stay closed, no matter the size, because of the aerobic effects of exercise, and the amount of time people spend in there. Same goes for manufacturing facilities where workers have to do hard manual labor that increases their aerobic activity. If the factory workers are just pushing buttons, though, then let them open.

Food trucks should still operate everywhere.

I'm just brainstorming... what do you guys think?
I happened to be thinking last night how disney could reopen. Their biggest cash influx is the parks ... which will be trickier in the independent minded us than in america. Probably next would be their film ventures, like marvel and star wars. Then you have a lot of companies.

We are forgetting something though. This is a great time to be a streaming service and they have disney+. What if they positioned that as their crown jewel? Maybe have a very small number of people in the parks and follow them around with camera crews. To most people a vr of lots of rides would be close enough to the actual rides given how much it costs to be on it in real life.

Judging by the figures, I would think they can afford to mothball the parks and hotels for a while, which accounted for about a quarter of their revenue last year, while they wait for the shape of the things to come to become a bit clearer.

A short to medium time with a return to 100 percent, yes. Unfortunately they will not be at 100 percent. Like a lot of places, they should look at reinvention rather than pin their hopes on something (back to 2019 practices and numbers) that could be years or decades away.

The Efteling (our major theme park) is opening in a few days. Only limited tickets per day and only pre ordered on Internet, time slots when you can enter, a lot of one way paths are created.
1.5 meter distancing in the waiting lines. Staff doesn't help you to get in or out. You have to close your carts yourself. Staff only checks from a distance. No free choice where to sit in a ride. A lot of points with hand sanitizers and the rides are cleaned more than normal, especially the grips.
Restaurants, bars and hotels closed. Only soda machines available. Restaurants and bars will open in June when it is allowed in the rest of the country as well, with the same restrictions as the rest of the country.

Zoos and museums are opening again soon as well, also with ticket sales restricted in combination with time slots to enter, one way walking paths etc.

Visiting theme parks, zoos, museums, beaches and city trips are no reason to use public transportation. So you have to come with your car or other transportation.
Staying home with even the slightest symptoms and distancing are of course still mandatory.

Dunno, though certainly the far right are involving themselves in the protests

and I think I saw that Jayda Fransen, their former deputy leader (retweeted by Trump) was involved in publicising them.*

I see Piers Corbyn (worryingly, Jeremy is the saner brother) managed to get himself arrested

Police took Piers Corbyn away in handcuffs after he joined protesters with a megaphone, proclaiming that 5G and the coronavirus pandemic were linked.

He also said “5G enhances anyone who’s got illness from Covid," and called the lockdown a “pack of lies to brainwash you and keep you in order”.

He was taken away after declining to leave when asked by a police officer and declining to give his details when asked.

*ETA: Apparently not, though -- she runs an organisation with a similar name to that of the group promoting them, but no one seems too sure who that group actually are, though Richard Inman, who is said by Scram News to own the group, also has ties with the anti-Muslim far-right:

ETA2: Further reports here

We just watched the Graduation special for the Class of 2020, and it was great. It felt hopeful and uplifting. I loved the diversity. My mom mentioned it as soon as it was over...how good it was to see so many different graduates included. Malala was so inspiring, H.E.R. was my favorite performance, although the Jonas Brothers are a close 2nd. Everyone was really GOOD, though.

The absolute best, of course, was President Obama's commencement address. For an hour, it just all felt better.

If you didn't get to see it, I encourage you to take the time. It's really good.

Who would you rather have leading your country during the pandemic, Trump or Bolsonaro?

The US has a more decentralized system than Brazil. So we are doing better despite a similar level of idiocy at the top. Their case rate is still growing exponentially.
