There was a huge Gorean land-war in Sinaburoe right next to our land in Noonkkot and it was a yuge pain in the neck as they bought up people's first lands and tried to push each other out of the sim by building castles and mansions in 16x32 chunks and leaving sex toys on our parcels. Took ages for the sim to clean up after they left.

So I don't see any post-Gorean period as viable.

I have to go with the Paleolithic. We were still a dangerous species, even that far back, but there were only a million of us so our damage to the surrounding ecosystems was more contained.

Of course, strictly speaking, that's more an archaeological period than a historical period, but I still stand by my choice.

As a historian, I'll say they've all been shyte to somebody. Often nearly everybody. At least now we have better technology and easy access to coffee.
Mostly to everybody. In most time periods it's awesome to be one of the folks on the top, and shit to be one of the folks who aren't on the top.

Given the standards of the times, even royalty didn't have it so good compared to a middle-class 1st world citizen of today. But for everyone else, it was even worse, so I guess "awesome" is relative.

Life sucked even at the top back then. Four out of seven of Henry VIII's siblings died in infancy, along with 2 of 7 of Katherine of Aragon's. Only one of six of Henry & Katherine's children survived (Mary). Henry suffered from a festering wound for 12 years (jousting accident), which contributed to his death at age 55. Pope Clement VII, who excommunicated Henry over ditching Katherine, lasted only a year longer, to die at 56.

So my favorite historical period is the late 21st century, when most of today's problems will have been solved. Today is not perfect, but it is a hell of a lot better than the past, even in my lifetime.

Favorite historical period... as in prior to central air and indoor plumbing? Pfffff.....

Maybe if I can have some serious upgraded engineering done to my biology, but otherwise my favorite historical era has yet to come. Not that I'll be around to see it. :-/

Real life: if I could "hand wave" my diabetes and didn't have to worry about hospitals, meds, etc, I would live to experience the 50's and early 60's. Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, early college protests, etc.

SciFi: Niven's "Known Space".

Fantasy: Ugh uh. NaNo. Too many monsters. No. Thanks anyways, I'll take the T-Shirt.

Narnia wouldn't be too bad..... even the 'human' monsters aren't as bad as what we have now. And yeah, I think I'd like to be a teen/young adult in the mid-late 60s.... at least long enough to enjoy the music scene.

In which period I would like to live is simple: Now and preferably in continental Western Europe. The south of the NL is pretty much ideal.
Yes, that is where I live now already.

The most fascinating to read about for me are the Middle Ages.
A lot of people think it was a dull 1000 years where not so much happened, but that is totally not true.
The development from a totally agricultural society to complex city life is very fascinating.

Thanks, Sid.

I would note the question in the OP is "what is your favourite historical period and why?"

Not "Which historical period would you like to live in?"

Why me?
A thread can be started, but not directed.

The middle ages is the most interesting period to read about... followed closely by the peak of the Roman Empire for me. If I had to live in a period before modern conveniences I'd pick living on a farm during the middle ages between major plagues and wars.... haha.

I do think many modern people underestimate how happy people were before modern conveniences. Being out in nature and performing manual labor with more face to face socialization might be a better circumstance for human happiness than what we have now. This isn't to say there were no HORRIBLE things about living in those days such as the immense infant mortality... And I deliberately said I'd want to live between major wars and plagues for a reason, haha.

I find most any historical period fascinating and if there were time machines/time travel, I'd like to see most of them.

The ones I find the least interesting as the American Old West, the World Wars, ... well, I don't consider 'modern' history to be history, really...
