ICE is going after Europeans now, at least 1 German was held for 6 weeks. It's a DW article so it only lists Germans, but it must be affecting the whole continent as well.

This is just pure malice. I feel certain that Trump is wrecking relationships with good allies just to hurt both countries. Even if we get him out in favor of a more friendly democratic administration again, the damage to our reputation will take decades to repair. I'm of course doubtful we'll ever get that chance.

It's really difficult to shake the assumption that we'll "get back to normal" again someday in the indefinite future. Intellectually I know that this is a very unlikely possibility; emotionally I still struggle to let that go.

Trump did not get us here. We're here because the country has reached such a degree of social and cultural dysfunction that it would allow the nomination and election of a man who is patently unfit for office. Even if you take Trump away, you're still left with the conditions that brought him to power. There is no fix for that.

Totally agree. I've posted before that I really fear fascism might be inevitable everywhere. This doesn't mean I won't fight it in any productive way I can, but I do feel like dictatorship have long term advantages over democracies for a variety of reasons. The very short version is disinformation spreads like plague in democracies but is the truth is easy for dictatorships to ban with modern technology. That and fear mongering seems to make many people want a "strongman" dictator.
