Until very recently, as in until the last few hundred years (if that long), this was the prevailing attitude toward conquest. Human history since our origins has been successive waves of humans displacing the population before them. Africa, Asia, Europe -- all had hunting & gathering peoples who were wiped out by the new high tech of farmers. All forgotten and lost to pre-history, except for the remnants uncovered by archaeologists and linguists. The conquest of indigenous peoples in Australia and the Americas are more recent and so not forgotten.

This new morality of guilt for conquest is a hard sell culturally. Personally, I don't think it will last all that long.

America is no longer a member of the free world. That is the almost unbearable truth that has been revealed over the past two months. For Europe, this turn of events has been and will continue to be a painful loss, requiring a more or less complete re-evaluation of their militaries and economic orders. But for Canada, the loss of a sane America is a direct threat to our national survival, and a grotesque betrayal of one of the longest-standing peaceful relationships in world history.

For Canadians, Americans are not just friends and neighbours and allies; they are kin. Americans are our family members, often literally. We have woken up to find our cousins plotting, openly, to enslave us.

I'm not sure how I feel about this article since I feel like the joking was very healthy and friendly for most of my life. But the rise of Trumpism obviously made everything turn more hostile. Win-win trade relationships just HAD to become a matter of winners and losers. I think it's the direct result of fearmongering propaganda that made many people think enemies were EVERYWHERE.
