'Whiteness' has never been just about skin colour it's also had a religious aspect to it, at least in the US but maybe elsewhere too.
To be white it wasn't enough to be white, you also had to be protestant in some manner and as Italians and Irish tended to be catholic they were on average the wrong religion to be 'white'.

At one point in my early employment history, I took up insurance sales (I know, boo). We had a team of about 6 agents and coordinated our canvasing to avoid conflicts. Our leader was this guy named Jerry, who was so skilled at jibber-jabber he could talk you out of your first born. He was presenting to this young Korean couple who were starting a family. Jerry was being conversational when he said "Now, me, I'm Irish"..... The Korean man stood up, surprised, in broken English "You Irish!? Me Irish too!"

Jerry's favorite story, He loved stories with morals, and his only moral from this one was to never assume anything.

If you had a DNA test on file, you would still have no idea what your background ethnicity is. The idea of "German" or "Irish" genes is about 0.1% science and 99.9% marketing. One of my siblings became deeply involved in genealogy and discovered that our paternal ancestors originated as Huguenots in France. As you may know, being Huguenot went rather violently out of style around 1685, so rather than take "employment" as galley slaves, they beat it out of France to Holland. For unknown reasons -- probably at the urgent request of the local authorities -- they then dashed to Scotland and, eventually, to the southern US where they promptly became entrepreneurs in the corn byproducts industry. So, what do I choose for headwear to "honor my heritage?" Beret? One of those pointed Dutch caps with the wings? Tam O'Shanter? Trucker cap that says "I'm with stupid ➡ ?" We haven't even touched on my mom's side, which supposedly included German*, English, Spanish and Russian. A genetic test is supposed to untangle that mess? LOL!

* "Swiss-German." To paraphrase Norm MacDonald, I don't know if you're a student of history, but there were a couple of times when Germans got real unpopular here ...

A federal immigration agent shot and killed a woman in Minneapolis on Wednesday in a deadly escalation in the Department of Homeland Security’s increasing occupation in Minnesota. The woman, 37, was in her car at an active ICE operation when an agent fired multiple shots into the vehicle, according to videos of the shooting and statements from local officials.

“They are not here to cause safety in this city,” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said in a press conference following the shooting. “What they are doing is causing chaos and distrust,” he continued, “and in this case quite literally killing people.”

“To ICE,” he said, “get the fuck out of Minneapolis. We do not want you here.”

These statistics are supposed to be used for determining discrimination at universites, but now will be used to encourage discrimination at universites.

I tried looking up my parent's last names and it just said one was common in Germany and Ireland and England and the other was English and Scottish.

At this point its all just a mess of "American" probably anyway. I had a cousing that did the geneology thing but my one granfather was adopted very young and I am not sure he ever knew his parents.

The ICE officer who fatally shot 37-year-old Renee Good in Minneapolis on Wednesday has been identified as Jonathan Ross, who was the same officer who was dragged 50 yards in Bloomington back in June 2025.
