People encountered gif as a file type with no context to guide pronunciation. So they mostly went with the soft g sound. When you downloaded an image file with that extension it did not come with a history lesson or pronunciation guide so people voted with their vocal cords.

Years later a bunch of know it alls get on their fucking high horses and use their esoteric bullshit to lord it over other people. That's not how language works. It changes. It evolves. And it doesn't give two shits about your undefined acronym. It's a soft fucking g. Get over it.

You have it exactly backwards.

It's always been actually spelled out, or hard G, until the guy who invented the format started pushing soft G because he thought making people pronounce it like the peanut butter would make it more popular: "Steve Wilhite says that the intended pronunciation deliberately echoes the American peanut butter brand Jif, and CompuServe employees would often say "Choosy developers choose GIF", spoofing this brand's television commercials." Soft G GIF is literally a marketing scheme.
