Which explains this:
Some of the trees in the olive groves there are, or were, over 1000 years old, and the groves have belonged to the same families for generations -- they're all small family-owned concerns, with the villagers forming their own agricultural cooperatives to buy shared equipment and to market and sell the produce.

The largest fire burning in California right now is the Dixie Fire burning northeast of Chico (remember the fire that devastated the town of Paradise? Yep, same area). At 463,477 acres, it is the largest single wildfire in California history - a record previously set by the Creek Fire in the Fresno County foothills last year at 379,895 acres. The effects of the Dixie fire, however, are being felt all over the Western US, as huge smoke plumes blanket the region. The Dixie Fire has burned 589 structures, devastating the town of Greenville. It is only 21 percent contained.

I approve of this message. We stand no chance at all of surviving climate change if we aren't willing to face uncomfortable truths about the cost of our preparations.
This analysis makes clear that the pat notion of “affordable clean energy” views the world through a narrow keyhole that is blind to innumerable economic, ecological, and social costs. These undesirable “externalities” can no longer be ignored. To achieve sustainability and salvage civilization, society must embark on a planned, cooperative descent from an extreme state of overshoot in just a decade or two.

Seems the liberal hoax called the “Caldor Fire” might take out Tahoe next.

All of the highways into and out of Tahoe are either closed or in absolute gridlock as people flee. Tahoe will be toast if the triple digit, high winds weather continues much longer.

Something mentioned in local news today is chilling:

The blaze — combining with the Dixie Fire burning farther north in Plumas and Lassen counties — has also dashed the decades-long belief that a wildfire could not cross the Sierra Nevada. Both fires crossed the Sierra and had burned more than 1 million acres combined by Tuesday morning.

“We haven’t had wildfires burn from one side of the Sierras to another,” said Cal Fire Chief Thom Porter. “We did that with the Dixie [Fire], now we have with the Caldor. Two times in our history and they’re both happening this month. So we really need to be cognizant that there is fire activity happening in California that we have never seen before.”

The Nevada side of the road is now under orders to evacuate. This came in three minutes ago:
