Wondering if she has made, consciously or unconsciously, a major sacrifice to show how any opposition to Rump will be treated.

Not a huge fan of Christianity, but have huge respect for those who earnestly strive to live by its true tenets. I've met a bishop or two like that in my travels. None of them were credulous or poorly-educated, leading me to believe she knew the likely consequences of her words.

Late Tuesday night, the president demanded an apology from Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde and Washington National Cathedral, after Budde pleaded with Trump to “have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now,” and to “honor the dignity of every human being” during a Tuesday service held in celebration of his inauguration — and which Trump attended.

I think it's all of us, you know. I think it's not about me. It's about the kind of country we are called to be. And that's what I did my best to try and speak to, to present an alternative to the culture of contempt, and to say that we can bring multiple perspectives into a common space and do so with dignity and respect. And that we need that, and the culture of contempt is threatening to destroy us. And I'm getting a little bit of a taste of that this week.
