Walmart, Target Kill Receipt Signature Requirements - Business Insider

I think it was NPR's Radio Lab program that talked about the signature requirement. The signature is not an identity verification, neither for the businesses involved nor the credit card user. It is a sign of the willingness of the user to repay the debt just incurred. When we put our hand to sign a document of any sort, we've made a promise. And despite the counter-example living in our White House, almost all of us keep our promises to repay debts.

might be a bit far there... I've long felt like willingness to repay a debt to a friend is a great litmus test to separate very upstanding people from people who are kind of shady.... But I do agree with the sentiment.
