Pope John Paul came down pretty hard on the 'liberation theology' movement, and I think he shifted some of the principals around. And then there was Ratzinger, but I'm just guessing. There are missing puzzle pieces on immigration and Catholicism and am dealing with a foot issue and insurance red tape so ... not really much into doing a deep dive right now..

There seem to be plenty of Catholics doing something, or trying to, or at least protesting, about the kidnappings and deportations, but they're maybe not getting much publicity.

Though since Trump and his administration don't seem to care much about what the federal courts think of all this, they're probably not particularly interested in what Catholic cardinals, bishops and lay activists think about it either.

You mean JP2? Yeah, he equated that with Communists. Which is also why he tended to go easy on the excesses of Capitalism. And of course conservatives in the US loved JP2 because of how anti-commie, and anti-socialist he was. Cold War politics and all that. And how he cracked down on lefty clergy "south of the border" in places where the US supported capitalist dictatorships.

Modern American right wingers just want Francis to demonize the gays and trans and not talk about poverty and the excesses of capitalism. If the Catholic Church started doing that more, Evangelical Protestants would turn on the Catholics right quick. And it would be just like the old days.
