Fact Checking

Those Factist™ Facts

So now [billionaire redacted] is paying me [absurdly inflated amount redacted] to fact-check a series of claims by or about Trump and Vance and reduce them into a sort of undifferentiated fact slurry; fact-ish facts, that put true things and false things on a more equal footing and deliver a more balanced journalism. We might call them factist.
An example

THE CLAIM: Donald Trump referred to his political opponents as "vermin" who are "poisoning the blood of the country," echoing the exact words used by Adolf Hitler.

THE FASTCHECK: There's a mixture of fact and false in this claim. On the one hand, Trump did make these statements using these exact words, on many occasions. And it is also true that these statements are identical to phrases and words used by Adolf Hitler to demonize the minority groups his government went on to mass murder. On the other hand, this set of facts being true is potentially very damaging politically to Donald Trump, so calling it a true statement would upset the political balance of our coverage. What I'd like to ask is, while it is an empirical historical fact that both Trump and Hitler said these things ... is it?

FACTIST™ RATING: Mostly false

Probably mostly because it was indoors, but also because he feels safe when he's surrounded by white supremacists.
It helps that sense of safety when they can funnel audience members through metal detectors.

The sequel will probably be better.

It's not like we are being presented with anything new. Both Harris and Trump have had 4 years to show us just how much of an agent of change they are. Come on Charlie Brown, kick that football one more time.
I am not sure what you are getting at here. Trump has been President and shown he will influence all policy in extremely negative ways.

Harris has been VP, who's only real job is existing in case the President dies or gets killed. She has not had anywhere near the policy influence Trump has had for 4 years.

As for Gaza, war is always bad, but these two sides have been going back and forth for like 100+ years now. With who the aggressor and "evil" one being flip flopping almost every time. The only people who can ever stop this endless cycle of bull shit, is the people there, in the area. Right now Israel seems to be the pretty fucking bad ones here, but let it settle down (again) by next year, and in 5 years, we will find out Palestine is the ones who are being massive assholes.

Outside influence is not going to change this.

Project 2025
Sorry, I don't understand. Harris said she'd be open to appointing a member or members of the opposing party her cabinet, as have most (if not all) previous presidents.

What has this to do with Project 2025, which is a blueprint for the appointments the far-right would like Trump to make?

You'll have noticed (or perhaps you haven't) that a number of prominent Republicans have announced they're supporting Harris rather than Trump, the official Republican candidate, in the presidential elections. Presumably Harris will select her appointees from the group of Republicans who support her, not Trump, rather than supporters of the Project 2025 programme.

Please explain.

Trump ridiculed after accusing Kamala Harris of mistreating Mike Pence
“They say she has many deficiencies, but she’s a nasty person,” Trump told the interviewer, Mark Levin. “The way she treated Mike Pence was horrible. The way she treats people is horrible. The way she treated Justice Kavanaugh in that hearing – in the history of Congress, nobody’s been treated that way.”

Trump’s comments prompted a response from Harris’s campaign, which appeared to interpret it an example of age-related confusion and evidence that the former president, who is 78 and now the oldest presidential candidate in US history following Joe Biden’s withdrawal, is in mental decline.

“In a stunning senile moment, Donald Trump just suggested it was Kamala Harris who treated Mike Pence poorly,” the campaign posted on X, linking to video footage of Trump’s comments.
In fact, Trump may have been referring to a 2020 vice-presidential debate between Harris and Pence, when the now Democratic nominee twice told her opponent “I’m speaking” when he tried to interrupt her as she articulated an argument.

However, the comments evoked social media references to Trump’s notorious treatment of Pence after his presidential election defeat to Biden, when he tried to pressure the vice-president into refusing to certify the results in Congress, as dictated by the US constitution, and then egged on a mob to attack the US Capitol while Pence was inside.
Posting on social media, David Corn, a journalist with Mother Jones, wrote: “What? Did she call him the p-word and incite the violent mob that chanted ‘Hang Mike Pence’? Because if she did, she probably should drop out of the race.”

On the morning of the 6 January 2021 Capitol attack, Trump reportedly told Pence: “You can either go down in history as a patriot, or you can go down in history as a pussy.”

Later, with the crowd baying for the vice-president’s blood, Trump allegedly told aides that “Mike Pence deserves it”.

Some good news from my part of the U.S.

A top Trump volunteer in Massachusetts is out after sending an email on Sunday evening warning “the campaign has determined that New Hampshire is no longer a battleground state” and urging supporters to put their efforts into Pennsylvania instead.

Tom Mountain, who had served as one of several vice chairs for the Trump in Massachusetts, wrote “the campaign has determined that New Hampshire is no longer a battleground state,” and advised supporters to instead direct their attention to Pennsylvania, the Boston Globe reported in an exclusive.
Mountain wrote in the email “Trump was ‘sure to lose by an even higher margin’ in New Hampshire than in 2016 and 2020, citing ‘campaign data/research.’ He claimed resources would be suspended and the campaign would not send Trump or high-profile surrogates such as his sons.
