The squares are catching on! My local news had a story about a new viral game called Wordle. It looks like a simple word search game, with one puzzle to solve per day type thing. It's an SPA, though, not an app. Or... is SPA the right term here? I can't keep up with web dev jargon sometimes.

Anyway, if you got it from the app store, you got ripped off. There are no ads, and no installation in the official version. The local morning news reporters were astonished that it's not an app. It was kind of cool to see reporters wrap their heads around this concept, that web pages can basically do what apps do.

The first thing I would change in that article is to use the actual dictionaries the game uses. It has two, one for all allowed guesses and the other for all all possible solutions. If you want an excellent starting word, one is RAISE.

That article would really only need the solution list.

I don't think there is any way for the NYT to monopolize it. All the answers are predetermined in the javascript for several years to come.

The NYT can put up a paywall but I don't know that will stop someone else from putting up the same game with a different name. There's already a bunch of clones out there.

I know you're right, that's what they will probably actually do, but I think they would profit from this more by using wordle as a pure branding play. Just slap an NYT logo across the top and call it a day. Maybe they can also get away with a banner ad at the bottom. I doubt the users will tolerate anything more agressive than one tasteful banner ad, though.

If you want a real challenge, there's an irish wordle now. It's called Foclatch, which is probably pronounced meow.
