So, what are the odds there will be anything major that has not already leaked with several independent confirmations?

For those who need a recap, let's start at the beginning:

Well let's just say that JJ Abrams did a good enough job to somewhat repair the damage which has been inflicted by Rian Johnson. But Abrams is not the genius many perceive him to be, so the movie is a little bit above average for Star Wars, but nothing more or less than fan service.

By the way Disney shelved all further Star Wars movie plans they had; only one further movie should be released in 2022, then that's it for the Star Wars franchise probably for a longer time in cinemas, because in total Disney made a loss on Star Wars. They were not able yet to cash in the price they had paid for the franchise to Lucas.

So Rey who was "nothing special" and had unnamed parents in episode 8 suddenly became the granddaughter of Palpatine, who wants her to take his throne. Oh and by the way Palpatine is alive, and orchestrated all events including Snoke from the shadows. Palpatine has nothing new to offer and delivered a quite boring performance; he's just decoration because Star Wars always needs a bad guy and Snokes is dead, and a bad guy who turns into a good one who is Kylo Ren.

But Rey decided to betray her loving granddaddy, stayed with the good side of the force and later adapted the name Skywalker to become Rey Skywalker!

Oh brother....

They didn't realize that along with the property itself they were buying one of the most unpleasable fanbases in all of media.

You can consider the fanbase of SW as a huge plus: loyal as fuck, and willing to spend tons of money on all type of merchandise, also willing to wait many years until the next movie comes out.

The problem was not the fan base, the problem was within Disney's creative department.

We've got a saying over here: the worm needs to be tasty for the fish, but not for the fisherman. Disney created worms for the fishermen, and of course this failed and backfired hugely.

We're just going to have to agree to disagree on this one. By most accounts, The Rise of Skywalker is 100% pure fan-service, and I've seen a whole lot of reviews complain about it for exactly that reason.

Disney did not make perfect Star Wars movies, but they were no more flawed than pre-Disney Star Wars movies. The problem is very much the fan base, which is divided into factions with very distinct and mutually-exclusive opinions about what a Star Wars movie "should" look like or how the Star Wars story is "supposed to go", with each faction claiming to speak for the entire base and proclaiming outrage on behalf of all fans when a movie comes out that doesn't match their faction's vision. For every fan review expressing appreciation that Rise of Skywalker "fixed" the previous director's "mistakes", there is an angry review that calls it cowardice.

I haven't seen The Rise of Skywalker yet - but I've enjoyed this trilogy. Way better than the prequels.

Too bad they did not declare the entire existing sequel trilogy a dream sequence and just bring Lucas in to do 3 films from the treatments they bought from him.

Well, they did not go out of their way to make it so people would like the new films. They bought treatments from Lucas of how to cap a 4 decade franchise .... and then ignored them. Plus they seem to care more about new fans in China than their existing ones.

Nah people were already hating hard on Lucas's prequels; it definitely wasn't Disney not going Lucas's route that kept fans angry.

I think I read a summary of Lucas's treatments for the sequel-trilogy. There was lots about midichlorians....the most hated Star Wars thing Lucas ever invented. It would not have helped, I am confident.

I was put off watching any other SW movies after that midichlorian stuff. I barely made it through episode 6.

Again: the fan base is not the problem; making movies which did not cater for the basic needs of the own fan base was. Aside that having a bad script on top of that which was full of ridiculous holes and meaningless bowings to China, which were not even interesting to watch, did not help either.

But yes, if you liked episode 8 of course episode 9 must look like fan service - and in a way it is. Disney decided that they do not want to burn more money on the franchise and alienate the fan base further, instead to give the fan base what the majority of the fan base wants - a Star Wars movie with explanations. Many of the explanations given though are really lame and give you those bad deus ex machina vibes no modern movie should have.

The box office records also show that it has the smallest revenue on a weekend alone compared to episode 7 and 8; and that's because mostly people do not expect much any more from this movie. Important is what in the long term run comes out, anyway it will be a commercial success, but not as big as Disney hoped it to be.

And the overall problem with episode 9 is that the script again is still meh and that this triology overall lacks the broader vision - episode 1 to 3 was about how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader and the republic was ripped to shreds. 4 to 6 was about how Vader was rescued and the empire destroyed. And episode 7 to 9 has what overarching story it wants us to tell? I have no clue about it.

Yelling at your fan base will do you no good; insulting it neither. Simple as that.

Heretic Kitty as I am I wonder how it's 1st week box office revenue compares to Cats.

Actually it would have dealt with the Wills. Which are a sort of go-between of midicholrians and sentients. How much is would have dealt with them is unknown though, I would have been cool with him mentioning them once or twice, like he did with the midichlorians. Since the original name for Star Wars referred to the Journal of the Wills it would not have been something new either.

If Lucas wanted to mention them and it made him happy I would not have minded at all. It would have seemed strange if overdone but a happy storyteller is a good storyteller.

Hmm, should Cat's 1st week be the 1st week of release or the 1st week after the patch? (google it, what you see now will not be what you will see later)

I only knew both movies were blatantly tyring to rip money out of decades old fandoms. I didn't know the Cats movie was so bad it had to be rerenderd though.
