I got an invite on my main Reddit Account, which I have not used since they killed 3rd party apps, but has like 750,000 karma.

But non of the dozens of other smaller Reddit accounts I have.

I'm not a mod anywhere, karma less than a 10th of your main acct... and I got an invite as well. I do spend too much time on reddit though, it's far and away where I spend most of my online/social-media time. With here being mildly distant second and everything else being almost completely negligible.

I'm not sure I'd count Reddit as social media, myself. I use it a whole lot - like you, way too much time I think. And obviously I'm there talking to/at other people. But like...I don't have any "friends" that I regularly talk to there. I've joined bunches of subreddits, and there's a handful that I post to "most often" I guess, but never so much that I'd be considered (or consider myself) part of the "community". In fact I've never even really noticed other people replying to each other as if they were "regulars" who knew each other, like on forums like this.

Shoot I don't even look at the names of the people I'm replying to on Reddit, I just blip right over them. I think maybe because the handful of times I did look at someone's name it was an awful, awful name.

Yeah, everyone comments on Reddit come up about how bad Social Media is for people, you get a troop that is like, "Yet you use Reddit."

But it's different.

I mean, personally, I don't pay any attention to profiles or even karma ever. I basically treat it like 4chan in that everyone is faceless, even though they are not.

I signed up for the ETrade thing and now it's asking how many shares I am interested in and I think I may just delete my ETrade account instead because this is dumb and Reddit is dumb and I don't need to get caught up in rich people gambling like this.

It was an email. I had one a week or so ago from Reddit and one a day or two ago about actually showing interest and setting up an ETrade account.

Speaking of Reddit.

I block it for ONE day and go back and it's broken, and WTF did you people do, it was ONE DAY.

So, I have, more recently, mostly borrowed using the mobile website. Which is a horrible interface, but not as bad as their dumb app.

Anyway, in the past, I tab a thumbnail, and it pops up the whole picture larger below the topic name.

Tap it again, and it becomes small again.

NOW, suddenly.

Tap a thumbnail, it becomes big, but also expands it to be full screen.

Tap it again, sometimes it makes it small again, sometimes not, but it also makes it full screen, again.

Which is annoying as fuck.

Anyway, this is part of why I don't care about this IPO. Reddit is increasingly a garbage site and frankly, I feel like they are increasingly desperate because lots of people, like me, are fed up with this endless bull shit and are just stopping using it.

I just blocked it again through NextDNS. Reddit and Twitter.

Meanwhile, I really like Reddit. I'm on over a dozen different subreddits, from various animals to k9 sports to tv shows to tech support tales. I don't have any problems -- technical or aesthetic -- with the interface or the design, and I would be sad if it all went away. Then I'd find something else to do with my time...

I'm fine with the PC interface, and actually prefer the new version (dark theme is a must for me).

But whoever made the executive decision to forbid landscape or even any rotation at all... really deserves an eternity on the freeway of eternal speedbumps.

Billions of public Discord messages may be sold through a scraping service

Cross-server tracking suggests a new understanding of "public" chat servers.

It's easy to get the impression that Discord chat messages are ephemeral, especially across different public servers, where lines fly upward at a near-unreadable pace. But someone claims to be catching and compiling that data and is offering packages that can track more than 600 million users across more than 14,000 servers.

Joseph Cox at 404 Media confirmed that Spy Pet, a service that sells access to a database of purportedly 3 billion Discord messages, offers data "credits" to customers who pay in bitcoin, ethereum, or other cryptocurrency. Searching individual users will reveal the servers that Spy Pet can track them across, a raw and exportable table of their messages, and connected accounts, such as GitHub. Ominously, Spy Pet lists more than 86,000 other servers in which it has "no bots," but "we know it exists."

As Cox notes, Discord doesn't make messages inside server channels, like blog posts or unlocked social media feeds, easy to publicly access and search. But many Discord users many not expect their messages, server memberships, bans, or other data to be grabbed by a bot, compiled, and sold to anybody wishing to pin them all on a particular user. 404 Media confirmed the service's function with multiple user examples. Private messages are not mentioned by Spy Pet and are presumably still secure.

I'm getting tired of these kinds of stories.

The stupid part about all this data harvesting is nothing will ever be done about it. No one with any authority sees it as a crime, and banning it would do nothing since all this is probably done in some other country. A fine would just become "cost of business". And in the end, too many people with influence make tons of money being data brokers.

It's disgusting.
