I think that's how about everyone feels. Nobody cares about Spez or reddit's corporate interests, but many people adore certain content creators and subreddits that have great content that speaks to them. More people than ever are chomping at the bit to get a good competitor to move to.

Yeah, the official app is garbage. There are people running pihole that have discovered just how outrageous the official app is in making tracking calls (thousands of calls).

The mods are claiming that they need the unofficial apps for modding itself and that with this move they are severely hampered, thus we can expect a lot more bots/porn/bad actors, etc...

Another issue, I think, is that Reddit itself has served as a study field basically for AI programs run by companies such as Microsoft and Google. Reddit wants to see the money, especially as they plan on going public rather soon.

Regardless, we shall see how they handle the incoming propaganda efforts and they will come. Looking to Elon Musk as a role model has me all sorts of squicked out. At the very minimum I think we'll see their laissez-faire attitude continue in regards to bots ran by foreign actors. It gets more people to the site and they're fine with that. I don't feel like any of these techbros has the slightest bit of social conscience. They don't care if their sites are used to undercut democracy, topple governments, foment disinformation, etc...as long as it leads to more eyes viewing it and money.

After all, he has his bunker and pile of money, and believes he will be a leader, not a slave if and when society collapses. Sure, dude.

In a post on its dark web leak site, the BlackCat ransomware gang, also known as ALPHV, claims to have stolen 80 gigabytes of compressed data from Reddit during a February breach of the company’s systems.

BlackCat was also linked to a March attack on Western Digital that saw hackers steal 10 terabytes of data from the company, including reams of customer information. That same month, the gang also threatened to leak data allegedly stolen from Amazon-owned video surveillance company Ring.

In a post published on Saturday, titled “The Reddit Files”, BlackCat says it contacted Reddit twice – once on April 13 and again on June 16 – but did not receive a response. “I told them in my first email that I would wait for their IPO to come along. But this seems like the perfect opportunity! We are very confident that Reddit will not pay any money for their data,” BlackCat wrote. “We expect to leak the data.”

Lemmy and /kbin. Literally for Reddit what Mastodon & Co. (see the thread) are for Twitter. And they connect to each other and to Mastodon and to the whole rest of the Fediverse. This means that if you're on e.g. Mastodon, you can still join a Lemmy community or a /kbin magazine. Imagine being able to join a subreddit with nothing but a Twitter account. But yes, it works.

Second Life and even OpenSim have Lemmy communities (= subreddits) already. More communities can be found through here (unfortunately, it can't also find /kbin magazines).

The time has come when reddit has enforced its absurd api charges. At least as far as I can tell. Reddit is Fun has shut down. The official reddit app on android is atrocious so I'll no longer be viewing reddit on my phone. I use it mostly on my pc anyway. They have a usable layout on a pc with old.reddit.com. The standard layout without the old is also atrocious. If they remove old.reddit.com that will be the end of reddit for me. Too hard to read. I don't know how much of an outlier I am. Time will tell. If anyone remembers digg, they were gone in a week or two after making some bad design changes with everyone flocking to reddit. Then there was myspace. Time will tell.

Several of the subs I used to read have gone private and I can no longer read the subs. I rarely post anything because a certain person is still stalking me and several others there. So, I haven't bothered messaging any mods to gain access.

People wonder why I claim my online life is shrinking. This is a good example.
