Thanks, this explains why users are angry, but I'm still mystified how this blackout protest will create any pressure for Reddit to change its mind about the policy. Does going private somehow reduce revenue stream? If it's just a way to register collective indignation, the gesture seems rather ineffective at effectuating change.
I do think the blackout will dip into their ad revenue. But Obviously this will be more effective if a lot of users agree to just not look at reddit for those days (which is tough!)

Over two days it probably won't affect their revenue much. All reddit has though is user created content. If that becomes crappy and people stop coming to the site they will have no revenue. All of their revenue is from advertising. If subreddits go private that means no one can see their content. Reddit could just take over the subreddit for say r/pics or r/cats and assign new moderators to it but that would certainly piss a lot of people off.

It could be seen as a prelude to what may happen for sure on July 1st.

There are hundreds of subreddits, and that's just cats. I haven't seen one peep of solidarity or even just a comment in any of my subs, so I'm dubious that this protest will have any punitive effect.

We shall see around July 4 if there is any.

I use the default reddit app... I had meant to try alternates because the damned thing WON'T ROTATE. No landscape, no upside down (charging port is on the bottom of my tablet, making it super awkward to use reddit while it's plugged in.)

Maybe those that are forced to return to the standard app will finally speak up and protest for rotation.

I use the default also. I'm not enough of a hard-core user to care about rotation. I go in, get what I want, answer a question or two (my way of "giving back") then get the hell out.

Instagram’s algorithms are actively promoting networks of pedophiles who commission and sell child sexual abuse content on Meta’s popular image sharing app.

A joint investigation from The Wall Street Journal and academics at Stanford University and the University of Massachusetts Amherst has revealed the extent to which Instagram’s recommendation systems “connects pedophiles and guides them to content sellers.”
Accounts found by the researchers are advertised using blatant and explicit hashtags like #pedowhore, #preteensex, and #pedobait. They offer “menus” of content for users to buy or commission, including videos and imagery of self-harm and bestiality. When researchers set up a test account and viewed content shared by these networks, they were immediately recommended more accounts to follow. As the WSJ reports: “Following just a handful of these recommendations was enough to flood a test account with content that sexualizes children.”

It will suck especially for users of reddit on cell phones. The official app is garbage.
I don't use the app on mobile, I use the desktop web site. It probably helps that I use "old reddit" on a Full HD 10"+ tablet in landscape mode. I would never use Reddit on a phone, screen is too small so I'd have to zoom in constantly.

I use old.reddit.com too. The prevailing idea is they will be getting rid of that too, though they haven't said so.

The two day reddit blackout is coming in a few hours. As I think I've said, this probably won't matter. The real test will come on July 1 if or when reddit goes through with the changes they have said are coming.

Over six thousand subreddits, including many of the most-subscribed communities on Reddit like r/funny, r/aww, r/gaming, r/music, and r/science, have set themselves private to protest Reddit’s upcoming API pricing changes. It means these communities are no longer publicly accessible, even to Reddit users previously subscribed to them. Here’s a Twitch stream which is tracking the exact number of subreddits that have gone dark.

Moderators began planning the actions last week after the developers of some of Reddit’s most-beloved third-party apps said they wouldn’t be able to afford the platform’s updated API pricing. On Thursday, the developers for Apollo for Reddit and others announced they would be shutting down their apps on June 30th due to the API changes.
Many subreddits participating in the protest are going private for 48 hours, from June 12th to June 14th, but some plan to stay private until things change, according to a pinned post in the subreddit r/Save3rdPartyApps.

Someone at reddit woke up and realized there were essential third party tools for moderation which many subreddits could not do without. They stickied this to everyone's front page. They are allowing free use of the api for moderation bots.

I keep seeing this, but I am not sure how closed communities and a user boycott would cause a crash.

Maaaaaybe some commonly used, poorly coded scrapers that could not reach the private subs were hitring, failing, and hitting again rapidly, but that seems like it would need a lot of scraper bots to accomplish. Also if thats the case then Reddit could definitely cut their API costs by blocking all that.

Reddit said it was stability issues which does make sense. Tons of subs all going private at the same time can overload the server(s) with requests.

“A significant number of subreddits shifting to private caused some expected stability issues, and we’ve been working on resolving the anticipated issue,” Reddit said in a statement to NBC News.

ETA: oops Sorry. Quoted the wrong post.

ETA2: And the stickie note or whatever doesn't show up for me. Maybe because my account is my front page.
