This was predicted by many people. The question once July 1 comes is whether they can find moderators who can do a good job or whether they will ruin the site due to incompetence. It is a lot of work to be a good moderator. It is a volunteer job.![]()
Reddit Threatens to Remove Moderators From Subreddits Continuing Apollo-Related Blackouts
As some subreddits continue blackouts to protest Reddit's plans to charge high prices for its API, Reddit has informed the moderators of those subreddits that it has plans to replace resistant moderation teams to keep spaces "open and accessible to users". In a comment shared by r/Apple...www.macrumors.com
Yeah about that typo I fixed. There would be some.but they would seem like unreasonable bobbleheads rather than Reddit Corp having that reputation, which they do, because they are.
Yeah, they are wanting to chage something rediculous like $20 per user per month but they also mentiomed somewhere in this mess that it basically costs them $1/user per month. There wouldn't be [m]any complaints if the fees were reasonable. They aren't imo.
r/gifs also took a vote and is now doing the same thingr/pics taking the piss
In deference to the king's desire that the landed gentry take votes in regard to blackout, continuing operations, etc...pics puts up for vote whether or not to return to normal operations or only allow pics of John Oliver. Whether or not this was all in jest, I cannot say, yet the results speak for themselves in the latter link.

Boy oh boy oh boy...Reddit's CEO went on NBC News and explicitly said he's taking Reddit in a new direction inspired by Musk with Twitter:

Considering this, which seems plausible based on recent actions and comments, I’d be looking for a community-based alternative and working toward migrating away if’n I was a reddit mod.Reddit's CEO went on NBC News and explicitly said he's taking Reddit in a new direction inspired by Musk with Twitter:

If he intends to also follow Musk down the hole of banning anyone remotely liberal and allowing the nazis full reign it will be just in time to be a disinformation factory for the 2024 election, eh?Reddit's CEO went on NBC News and explicitly said he's taking Reddit in a new direction inspired by Musk with Twitter:

I look forward to how well they do when Reddit ends their rental and hosting agreements.FWIW I don't get the impression from his statements that he like necessarily agrees with Musk's politics. Maybe he does, I dunno. He just seemed really excited about the revelation that firing lots of people and charging for data access could increase the company's profit margin.
He's a prepper, bunker and all, something that a few of the techbros are doing in the event of an apocalyse. As far as politically, libertarian?FWIW I don't get the impression from his statements that he like necessarily agrees with Musk's politics. Maybe he does, I dunno. His big mistake here though is that Steve Huffman is no Elon Musk.
By which I mean, Musk was able to fire almost everyone because the personality cultists he retained and brought in are like, willing and eager to literally suffer just to be able to say that they work for him. They'll sleep in their offices and work mandatory overtime at regular pay and give up vacation days and basically work in an IT sweatshop because they think Musk is Tech Jesus.
Huffman doesn't have any of that. He can't boost the few actual supporters (if any) that he has on Reddit to make it seem like his terrible decisions are actually popular, and if he overburdens his employees too much they're going to just leave.
Ah.....maaaaaaybe. Maybe. But, real to real, if I suddenly had that kind of money - disposable income in the millions - I have to admit I'd probably buy at least a small doomsday bunker. Because out of context it's just conceptually a cool thing and also, if you had the money, why would you not? And I'm definitely no kind of ammosexual or prepper or anything like that. He's a prepper, bunker and all, something that a few of the techbros are doing in the event of an apocalyse. Two huge subreddits, r/pics and r/gifs, now only allow posts about comedian and Last Week Tonight host John Oliver. Both have reopened after going dark as part of the ongoing protests toward Reddit, and after each subreddit polled users, the new rules are now in place.
“As many of you are aware, we recently held a poll to decide on the future of the subreddit,” wrote r/gifs moderator u/IronSentinel. “This initiative was prompted by statements from Reddit’s CEO, who suggested that the desires of the platform’s everyday users were being eclipsed by those of moderators.” Moderators of thousands of subreddits set their communities to private to protest upcoming API changes that will force beloved third-party apps to shut down, but CEO Steve Huffman has argued that not all users are in support.
