I read the books, so I’m curious to see the series. It’ll be on Apple+ so I may try out the free trial just for this.

Looks similar to a show called Ascension. It was a mini-series on SyFy late 2014. Tricia Helfer was in it. It was 6 episode but was shown over 3 nights.

Not quite. Ascension was about a generation ship launched by the US in the 1960s. I've never finished watching it because of the soap opera plotting.

Silo is based on the Wool (or Silo) novels by Hugh Howey. It's a dystopian future story about mankind living in a vast silo hundreds of stories underground.

I guess similar was too strong of a word for it but from what I can tell some of Silo looks to have at least one thing in common with Ascension. I probably should have said that they could be similar in some ways.
"They are being lied to. The ship on Ascension is still on Earth. It's an experiment on if people could survive in a generation ship."
I recommend not watching Ascension since it just ends with a cliffhanger and many question. There were thoughts of it being series after that but it never happened.

So I watched the first episode just now, which is free if anyone is interested, and I really like it. Yes, I read the books, but it was a while back so I cant remember the details enough to spoil it, but at the same time, it all seems familiar. As in, Oh right I remember that. Actors are great. The reviews seem to be really good judging by the number of stars, but I haven’t read them nor the comments because I expect a bunch of geeks whining about whatever. Anyway, starting my free trial now ‘cause I’m definitely watching the whole thing.

I read Wool, and couldn't get any further. It was too much like old post-nuclear pulp SF from the 50s and 60s except less credible. I guess it might have been better for someone who wasn't already familiar with the genre.

That Cloverfield movie where they think the guy is a creeper bullshitting about the alien invasion and she gets out of his bunker and the alien actually shows up, now that was pretty good.

I have Apple+. So I've watched the first two episodes.

I do not particularly like shows that rely heavily on flashbacks, and the first two episodes were heavy with that format. I suppose I liked it enough that I'm still interested in catching episode 3 when it arrives.

Since you are getting Apple+ free trial, try:

In no particular order:
TV Series:
Schmigadoon! (musical humor)
Ted Lasso (dramedy)
Invasion (science fiction/aliens)
Mythic Quest (game-creator/workplace/humor)
For All Mankind (science fiction/alt history)
Slow Horses (spy)
Prehistoric Planet (naturl doc)
Acapulco * (soap; I stopped watching more because I have bad eyes and I do not know Spanish)
See (science fiction; post-apoc) * (Stopped watching because I can't stand one of the main characters, but it was interesting up until I fled)

Movie:
Tetris
Greyhound (WWII submarines/Tom Hanks)
Luck (animation)

I can't tell whether I'm enjoying Silo or not. Curiosity has me sticking with it... 'sunk cost fallacy'-style "I've watched this much, I have to stick with it to see what they reveal about all these things that haven't been explained.'.

The build-up is certainly taking its time though, and I'm getting kind of frustrated with it.

I’m really liking it so far. I think some of it is because I find it aesthetically pleasing. The colours, the clothes, etc. I know that’s a bit weird, ha.

I also know a little of what’s going on because of the books so maybe I’m not as in the dark, idk. I don’t see it as having anymore tropes than others in the same genre. There are a lot of women main characters so that does set a few off… Really, though, it’s just a mystery set in a dystopian future.

Just watched the finale and can’t wait for the second season. Some thought it was a little slow, but maybe they went in thinking it was going to be full of action. This isn’t space opera. I like action, too (I’m watching Warrior at the moment, trying to catch up for season 3. I love it.) but this is more of a detective mystery in a sci-fi dystopian setting.

Anyway, I really enjoyed it.

I'm conflicted. I love the production value, the digging into the mystery of what happened, both very recently and in the further past. That all was great, even if the revelations discovered weren't keeping pace with the new questions being raised.

What I didn't love was how 'incomplete' the season finale felt. Rushed in parts, blink and you might miss the implication of a scene fragment or offhand comment. Nuances and questions that will be -long- forgotten by the time season 2 drops, if it even addresses them.

So, I still can't choose a thumb up or down for it. It's both.

Maybe it makes more sense to me because I’d read the books. I didn’t think I would remember much details since it was a while back, but I suppose it must have helped. They probably want people to watch the first season a second time. I do wish they would have added one or two episodes and ended it more like in the book (before the next book), but some thought the pace was already too slow. If there isn’t a lot of sex and explosions, many people get bored…

"Total viewership hours" seems to be the new King Metric among streaming services, and it's really showing in a lot of content.

I watched "The Days" (the Fukoshima Reactor/Tsunami series on Netflix) and ended up leaving it accelerated. There was so much stumbling around in the dark, pointless slow-motion scenes... the dialog bits were great, but there was so damned much filler. And it seems like more and more shows are following the same template. :(
