"Businesses"

It's such a plastic, generically useful word.

Eh, business. The most likely cause for that jump in active users was that a lot more people have been working from home the past several months during the epidemic, and they desired a game-like environment which engaged them to some degree, but wouldn't require a great deal of regular concentration. The Lab still seems to dream their old dream of SL as a business platform.
With all the video conference software available these days, good luck with that Ebbe.

Time to open your eyes, SL is a Barbie doll dress up platform with some sex tossed in as an adult extra feature.
That is why people buy land, pay tier and create and buy stuff.
That is the only reason why LL is still in business, like it or not.

How hard can it be to grasp?

SL has the potential to also be a "game platform" but they need to fix some a lot of the jankiness first.

By which I mean, a platform to build a game on/in.

They'll continue to dream that dream because it's the grown-up, easy way to bring in revenue. I don't care if they keep hoping for it. Not as long as the Barbie dress up sex doll part isn't totally pushed aside in that hope.
