It's all in the service of his 'tough man' illusion. It's easy to be right... a weak man can be right... but you have to have POWER to get away with being maliciously, overtly, pettily WRONG. And he does it over and over. It's his way of saying "I have a team of loyal sycophants that will defend what I say, that I can say anything and MAKE it truth.
