Yup, his name and SL avatar are already used for a small survey they are conducting at the moment about PBR.

I swear I got an email with his name on it days ago, so I'm confused why this is now being announced. Also, I read the official announcement and it says something like the company was taken over 4 years ago. Did I miss something? I'm confused here and I don't like it!

I'm...a little anxious about this. I always liked Phillip during his LL days, but during his absence he has changed. For instance many people might be unaware but he is a hardcore cryptobro now; and if he's joining SL as the actual CTO it's hard - like, really hard - for me to see a future where he doesn't try to badly shoehorn crypto/blockchain into SL in some way.

iirc during the nft craze some company was selling 'land' for ridiculously stupid amounts of money. perhaps Philip is going to try to steer it down that route after all, sl at least has longevity behind it.

Hmm so the Cult of Rosedale hails the .. what is it now the 5th return? :) Current owner said on the latest Hamlet that they were 'good chums' so why is anyone surprised?

Well CTO is not so bad - he did invent quadraphonics after all. Sorry, reinvent but better =^^=
Good thing - if his Saintedness is really a crypto-berk then it is probably dead as an idea. So that is a 'good thing'. Lets give His Philness a time to recharge. After all he hasn't done every job at LL yet.

All good. (Tries to keep a straight face)

As part of his return to Second Life, Philip will be actively engaged inworld with our communities and creators to listen, learn, and collaborate on ways to improve our shared virtual world. He will be taking your questions and sharing more of his vision for Second Life this Friday at 10 am SLT as part of our next Community Roundtable series (location to be announced later this week). Here’s your chance to interact directly with Philip inworld to learn more about the past, present and future of our shared virtual world.
Philip has always been, time permitting, happy to sit and participate in constructive dialogue, answer questions, and argue points as long as the interaction remained civil. He did not, for example, want to sell private sims or provision free accounts. But he absorbed the input and came around. I suppose experimentation pervades his vision of everything. Try anything once, twice if it doesn't kill you, thrice if it doesn't set your parent's house on fire.

Did they lay off 10% of the staff to afford Mr. Rosedale?

Reminds me of an old baseball joke featuring the famously inept Bob Uecker:

Assistant Coach #1: Hey, they got a new catcher's mitt for Uecker!
Assistant Coach #2: Good trade!

Ah yes ....

Color me unenthused, skeptical as all hell, utterly unimpressed with the man ....

An SL Founder? Yep. That's all.

Who he was then is not going to be who he is now.

Philip Rosedale has been a visionary all his life, but that doesn't mean all his plans succeded or all his actions are the right ones.
He stumbled over gold with Second Life, but he had failures with other projects too.
We just will have to wait and see if his magic still works for Second Life. I sure hope so. Second Life can need some at the moment.

before founding High Fidelity in 2013, an open-source virtual world platform initially focused on VR
Second Life was originally focused on VR. The software was being developed to accommodate a haptic rig they were designing. It was all Snow Crash and Lawnmower Man up in there.

I had forgotten The Guild. Gonna queue a rewatch. It's funny how things move to the back shelf of the attic of the pottery shed of the mind.
