Axie still hasn't been able to do anything to repair this damage.

Because the vast majority of Axie's players were playing the game to eke out a poverty wage and not because they actually like or want to play the game, they're all leaving, stranding their "bosses" who had paid for all their onboarding costs and were passively collecting a cut of their earnings.

I wonder if anyone played that NFT game because they actually cared about it and thought the little blob bunnies were cute.

Musk & Twitter story
Corporate officers and anyone who owns more than 5% of a publicly traded company are considered "insiders", and are required to report their stock transactions to the Securities & Exchange Commission. That's likely what he violated. The reason for the rule is that insiders are more likely to have "inside information" about the company and can act on it before the public finds out. That's unfair to everyone else.

I haven't really had a look at it before but that @web3isgreat account is pretty fun. There's all kinds of great stuff in there.

Like this guy who put up an ad on Fiverr offering to develop tokens for startup NFT projects,. 32 projects hired him, and he wrote a function into all of their tokens allowing him to, at will, revoke everyone else's ownership of a project and give himself sole control over all the assets. Nobody in any of the 32 projects noticed the malicious code in the tokens until he started hitting the kill-switch on the most valuable projects:

Or this one where an NFT project sold its NFTs to buyers sight-unseen, with the gimmick that the images would be unveiled at a later specific date, adding an element of surprise - you might have unknowingly bought one of the SUPER rare and valuable ones for cheap, meaning amazing resale profits for you! Except once the reveal came, it turned out that one of the project founders used their insider knowledge to make sure they bought all the rarest images (for themselves, not on behalf of the project team):

Or this one, where an officially-licensed F1 racing game sold the official in-game F1 cars as NFTs, but then shortly afterwards the game lost its official license and shut down completely, rendering the NFTs totally useless and worthless, and the developer is now offering to replace NFT buyers' useless tokens with NFT cars from another completely unrelated and non-F1 racing game they're making.

By the way, it might be time to start a new thread called Nobody Cares about NFTs, or, I invested in NFTs and all I got was some crappy GIFs.

I suppose we could, if it seems like it's cluttering up the tech thread. It's mostly me posting the NFT stories anyways so next time I get the itch to share one I'll put it in its own thread.

It kind of feels the clown show is winding down though.

Clowns usually tend to get wound up. But I'm pretty sure the NFT circus is prepping to emerge from its winter quarters and soon will take to the road!

I agree. I think it's past time for a seperate NFT thread. As in, the subject is dying off. I think Jim Sterling has the best grasp on this overall situation. NFTs were a weirdo silicon valley fad that popped up and vanished over the past year. I think VR is riding a very similar hype cycle right now. 6 months from now nobody will be talking about NFTs or Horizon.

I have to say, I don't share some of you guys' optimism that NFT's are done for yet, based on what I'm seeing.

But even if they do go away, or are diminished in importance until they're not worth talking about anymore, I don't think we should treat them as a flash in the pan fad to just make fun of and move on. They were invented because of some larger problems with cryptocurrency, and those problems will continue to exist as long as cryptocurrency exists in the form it does. So NFTs "failing" to the point where they go away completely, only means that they'll have to be replaced with something new that's just as bad.

Now you see why I cashed out of bitcoin in 2017-18 and have stayed away ever since. I could see the whole crypto thing was sailing into the sea of irrationality. There's an old investor saying: "The market can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent."

The circus will fade, but the money laundering shall remain.

The agency even compiled an internal 83-page guide to internet slang which, thanks to a 2014 Freedom of Information Act request, is now available for your enjoyment. It’s on the Internet Archive, albeit in very low quality, and it has 2,800 entries from ALIHAL (at least I have a life) to WWOTW (wicked witch of the west) and everywhere in between.
