Man who rammed his vehicle into Michigan synagogue was naturalized citizen from Lebanon, DHS says

The armed man who rammed his vehicle into one of the nation’s largest Reform synagogues has been identified as 41-year-old Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a naturalized citizen born in Lebanon, according to federal officials.

An attacker armed with a rifle was fatally shot after ramming his vehicle into one of the nation’s largest Reform synagogues Thursday in what federal investigators called an act of violence targeting the Jewish community.

Jennifer Runyan, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Detroit field office, called the incident “deeply disturbing and tragic” and said that the FBI is leading the investigation.

The agency considers the crime a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community,” she said at a news conference Thursday. Investigators have not determined a motive yet.

The problem for Catholics is that Reconstructionism was never a neutral Christian project.

Douglas Kennard, a professor of theology at Houston Graduate School of Theology, has noted that under the extreme theonomist program, Christians of non-Calvinist traditions — including Catholics, Orthodox, Baptists, and Methodists — could find themselves “under threat of capital punishment.”

This is the logical endpoint of a theology that treats the Catholic Mass as idolatry and Catholic public worship as a violation of divine law enforceable by civil magistrates.

Wilson’s anti-Catholicism does not exist in a vacuum. It draws from an American tradition as old as the republic itself.

One thing I've seen pointed out before is that many of the really fanatical Christians will switch between "So many people believe in the god of Abraham, this proves it's the real god!" And "Only my little denomination is REAL Christianity" depending on what is convenient for that particular conversation.

So yeah... not really surprising this pastor would want to ban Catholicism and probably everything other than his particular practice.

That's inherent in Christianity since it accepts the authority of the Jews' Hebrew Bible (the Christian Old Testament), but holds that the Jews have misinterpreted the prophecies about the messiah, which Christians believe refer to Jesus and Jews believe have yet to be fulfilled (otherwise they'd convert to Christianity).

Consequently, for Christians of all denominations, the Jews are a constant reminder that the Bible, while divinely inspired, is dangerously open to misinterpretation by everyone, Christians or Jews. If you're Catholic you avoid this issue by deferring to the authority of the Magisterium's teaching, but obviously that isn't open to Protestants.

Bailiffs have boarded a Ryanair aircraft after the airline refused to pay compensation to a passenger whose flight was delayed.

Austrian officials took action after the budget carrier ignored a court order to pay the unnamed woman €890 in legal costs and compensation for a delayed flight two years ago.

A bailiff entered the plane, which was bound for London, as it sat on the stand at Linz airport on Monday and fixed a seizure sticker to the cabin when crew were unable to settle the debt.

The label, known as a “cuckoo sticker”, gives the court legal control over the aircraft, which was allowed to continue to operate under set conditions. The court can sell the Boeing 737 at public auction if the debt is not paid by a deadline.

Cesar Chavez abused and raped women and girls, NYT investigation says

Cesar Chavez, the famed union leader and champion of farmworker rights, has been accused of sexually abusing two girls in the 1970s as well as Dolores Huerta, with whom he co-founded the United Farm Workers, in the 1960s, according to an investigation published by the New York Times.

The newspaper spoke with two women who said they were children when Chavez began to groom and sexually abuse them during his time as UFW president. One of the women said Chavez raped her in a motel room in 1975 when she was 15 years old and he was 47. The other woman said Chavez began groping her in his office at the union's headquarters when she was 13. Both women, now in their 60s, were the daughters of organizers within the farmworker movement.

Huerta, a labor leader long revered for her work on behalf of farmworkers alongside Chavez, told the newspaper that he raped her in a car in 1966.

She told the Times that "Mr. Chavez drove her out to a secluded grape field in Delano, Calif., parked and forced her to have sex inside the vehicle." Huerta told the newspaper that she chose not to tell anyone about the rape because "she feared that no one within the union would believe her."

In a statement posted to Medium on Wednesday, Huerta wrote: "I am nearly 96 years old, and for the last 60 years have kept a secret because I believed that exposing the truth would hurt the farmworker movement I have spent my entire life fighting for."
