I don’t know if anyone has been following the news on the rioting in France…

The attackers used a car to ram through the gates of their home before setting the vehicle on fire so that the blaze would spread to the house, the mayor said in a statement.

Then when his wife, Melanie Nowak, tried to flee with the children, aged five and seven, they were attacked with firework rockets. Ms Nowak suffered a broken leg. One of the children was also injured.

This was all new to me, but let's provide some context. The riots were triggered by this:
France shooting: Who was Nahel M, shot by French police in Nanterre? - BBC News

Police shooting an unarmed young man, a minority, is business as usual. I don't condone the riots that followed -- they usually make the situation worse for everyone involved -- but riots always get more attention than the conditions that foster them.

What's left of the Titan has been recovered in the meantime by a company which contrary to Oceangate knows what it is doing. This includes the presumed human remains, which will be shipped to the USA for further studies. For the recovery a remotely operated vehicle was being used.

The sequel will probably be better.

Imagine the wreck being found in fifty or so years, only to be turned into a tourist attraction for billionaire photo safaris.
I was thinking the other day, in 1000 years, someone could find the Titanic, and assume this little wreck was part of it.

Probably not, because we have much better record keeping these days, but it would be amusing, and confusing for future people.

It was probably the other way round: the primary field of study of aerospace engineers is the construction of aircraft and spaceships. In order to design and build submarines, they HAVE to throw a lot of what they've learned overboard and start anew. Stockton Rush apparently didn't do that.

The choice to use carbon fiber as a hull material is quite telling: carbon fiber has high tensile strengh and is pretty lightweight, which makes it an ideal building material for aircraft. But in submarines, the extra buoyancy just means it needs to be countered by adding more ballast to the vehicle; the low compressive strength and vulnerability to shear forces of carbon fibers are what led to the Titan's demise.

Basically, this clip:

Bold of you to assume there will be literacy past 2100 CE.

Not happening, since the majority of the remains of the Titan and its passengers have been brought back to the surface. It will be analysed forensically by law authorities to understand what's happened, and the human remains - if identifyable and all is done - given to their families, so that they can have a proper funeral.

It couldn't happen anyway since the rate of deterioration of the Titanic would prevent it.

In fact, scientists think the entire shipwreck could vanish by 2030 due to bacteria that's eating away at the metal. The following photographs reveal the Titanic's deteriorating conditions.

The Titanic is disappearing. The iconic ocean liner is now slowly succumbing to metal-eating bacteria: holes continue to spread through the wreckage, and the railing of the ship’s iconic bow could collapse at any time.

Scientists named the new bacteria ‘Halomonas titanicae.’

While the deterioration has slowed, in 2010 proteobacteria were found on rusticles that had been recovered from the wreckage.

Recent estimates predict that by the year 2030 the ship may be completely eroded.

Since the ship’s 1985 discovery, the 100-foot forward mast has collapsed. The crow’s nest from which a lookout shouted, “Iceberg, right ahead!” disappeared. And the poop deck, where passengers crowded as the ship sank, folded under itself.

A couple of different tiktoks claim to have the text messages between the surface ship and the submersible. If it's real (consider the source), then James Cameron is right that the were trying to ascend, and they knew they were in trouble.

I was under the impression radio waves (which is the medium by which text messages are transmitted) can penetrate only a few feet of water.

Some pretty damning stuff in this article.
This is one of the passages that really stuck with me, especially if it was true that the Titan was ascending when it imploded. By the time you get warning, it's too late.
“He’s spinning the fact that his sub requires a hull warning system into something positive,” Jarl Stromer, Triton’s regulatory and class-compliance manager, reported to Lahey. “He’s making it sound like the Cyclops is more advanced because it has this system when the opposite is true: The submersible is so experimental, and the factor of safety completely unknown, that it requires a system to warn the pilot of impending collapse.”
