A bill, which was passed on Friday, for the first time has officially recognized the Ainu of Hokkaido as an "indigenous" people of Japan. The bill also includes measures to make Japan a more inclusive society for the Ainu, strengthen their local economies and bring visibility to their culture.

I hope they'll be releasing digital editions - this sounds like it could be well worth waiting for!

Science for the People magazine, in the tradition of the publication of the same name that arose from the anti-war movement in 1969, will be full of radical analyses of science in the world, taking on everything from the militarization and privatization of science to the need for a just climate solution for everyone.

  • If you want to challenge price gouging and profiteering for life-saving medicine, Science for the People is for you.
  • If you want deep analysis of how to tackle greenhouse gas emissions without providing cover to the same companies that profit off our global addiction to fossil fuels, Science for the People is for you.
  • If you want thoughtful reports on the fights for labor rights in scientific labs, Science for the People is for you.
  • If you want to join a growing movement ensuring that science is free of oppression in all forms, Science for the People is for you.
  • Science for the People believes that humanity’s bounty of scientific knowledge should be for all people, and for the furthering of social and environmental justice. We believe that military and corporate influences have a corrupting and undemocratic influence on science, and we believe that scientists must organize to overcome the racism, sexism, classism, and colonialism that often suffuses the history of their fields. We believe that a radically democratic science can and must meet the environmental and social challenges of the 21st century—and we want to build the movement to make that happen.
(The fundraising's complete, $24k raised of a $20k target)

an anti-hate group handed out free St George cross t-shirts at far right nationalist demonstrations, only they weren't quite what they appeared to be, they were heat-sensitive and changed when worn to show the text "St George was Syrian"

I thought a "yeller dawg" was traditional. Preferably a retriever.

Turns out, companies like TurboTax have to offer a free tax filing option if you earn below $66k. But guess what? The law apparently doesn’t have anything to say against them also making other sites where you do have to pay. Guess which one TurboTax makes sure you find through search engines?

In the UK, we can file online for free direct with HMRC. I'm rather surprised the IRS don't offer an equivalent service in the US, though clearly they don't.

ETA Porsupah will presumably know this already but other might not.

We don't yet know how to unstick ourselves from the money talks problem. Turbotax et al lobbied Congress to pass a law against the IRS "competing" with profit making companies.

From the IRS web page, you can get links to several free services, but the selection is complex depending on your income, what additional forms you need to file with your return, and which state you live in (some services can file both). We use FreeFile for federal taxes, and the State of Ohio has an online form that it created.

There is, but unfortunately that apparently didn't get into the unrolled version of the thread - that URL must've been in a subsequent reply:

It seems so strange the amount of hassle you have to go through in US over tax returns.
