Yeah it's awesome. I think I said it once before but, like just imagine the amount of hubris it takes to decide that when your memory doesn't agree with objectively-verifiable reality, it's reality that's obviously mistaken.
Funny because I don't read that as hubris when I've seen someone experience it, more like pants-shitting terror that they are somehow nuts, got nuts without any warning when they weren't looking...and then see them desperately clawing for corroboration only to find it in others (whew, not nuts)...buuuut then come to find out that they are all collectively mistaken but never understanding why. It can really scare some people!

It can't be that hard to just accept that sometimes you're just remembering things wrong. A lot of people misremembering something in the exact same way is certainly weird and kinda neat; I don't see how on Earth "FOTL underwear logos never had cornucopias on them" is something that should evoke gibbering terror in someone.

I mean and every Mandela Effect "change" is like that; something utterly trivial and pointless like a logo, or a line in a movie, or a character's name being spelled with an A instead of an E. But people are starting to act like these things are equivalent to the laws of physics changing.

Like five years ago it was just common geek knowledge that Darth Vader never precisely said "Luke, I am your father" and Captain Kirk never precisely said "Beam me up, Scotty", despite those phrases becoming ingrained in pop culture, and when you told someone that they're just like "Huh...how about that?" But now people are going absolutely psychotic about it, like "Oh yeah then how come so many people remember that phrasing then?" It's not misremembering pointless trivial BS that's driving people crazy; it's the falsely-imposed signficance.

I knew about the Mandela effect, but hadn't noticed that it had become some sort of esoteric conspiracy thing.
I actually like esoteric conspiracy theories, they can be entertaining and thought provoking. but looking at these example lists that are posted everywhere (for example here: 20 Examples Of The Mandela Effect That’ll Make You Believe You’re In A Parallel Universe), they are indeed so irrelevant, and most are so boringly easy to debunk - or at least it's so easy to find a credible explanation why many people might have mis-heard, mis-remembered or misspelled a certain detail - instead of claiming that there is a parallel universe where 'Sex and the City' is 'Sex in the City'.

In the times of the internet, those little irritating moments of "oh, I was so sure this was x and not y" suddenly find resonance - because our brains work similar, and remembering details is not our strongest skill. And when we find others who experience and echo the same irritation - our own mistake suddenly becomes a collective experience, we are not alone with our faulty memory, so it must be the real world/the universe/a conspiracy that tries to trick us.

Starting with Mandela himself, probably the only relevant example - that is what oppressive regimes want to achieve when they imprison their opponents. They want to silence them, they want to make the world forget about them. While his people kept up his fight, Mandela was invisible for the rest of the world for a long time - and those who didn't pay close attention simply might have assumed he died in prison, and they were surprised when he made the news again.

Sex in the City vs. Sex and the City - such an easy mistake to make. I remember that I mixed that up, too, repeatedly, because both titles kind of make sense - maybe Sex in the City even makes more sense. It is not surprising that many people, including journalists, misheard or misremembered the title. The 'evidence' of 'Sex IN the City' memorabilia looks to me very fake - no graphic designer with a sense for typography would set the letters of the word 'in' so wide apart.

Berenstain vs Berenstein - many last names with Yiddish / German roots end on -stein (stone). The ending -stain seems to be a comparatively rare americanization of -stein. It's not surprising that a lot of people didn't pay much attention how the name of a cartoon character for children was actually spelled, and then just assumed it would be spelled like a lot of similar names.

Magic Mirror on the wall vs. Mirror, mirror on the wall - again, easy. 'Mirror, mirror on the wall' is the original Grimm's version (Spieglein, Spieglein an der Wand). Don't know why Disney changed it to 'magic mirror' but those who remember it as mirror, mirror probably just have read or heard of the original fairy tale.

...and so on and so on. I ll rather look for some nice UFO sightings now.

F-word this guy.

Employers treat workers like red-headed stepchildren and can fire them instantly without notice; but an employee leaves without notice and that's "poor social skills"? Come off it.

Yeah sure I'm gonna give a job I can't stand two-weeks notice so they can cut my hours or pay or both, treat me even worse, or find some BS excuse to "fire" me before my last day.

I've seen some "work experts" these days recommend a last day notice (they also say to deftly avoid an exit interview), so your employer knows you won't be coming in after today and can make sure the various HR and paperwork issues regarding your employment are dealt with.

Just disappearing, though, seems a dumb thing to do. Do you leave that block of time in your personal work history as a blank spot on your resume? Ignoring the foolishness of using them as a reference, potential employers often to go through your list of former jobs to reach out for information about you.

Well that depends. I was shocked once to hear a manager in Ohio tell me that state law forbids employers from disclosing anything about former employees, except for confirming they were employed and for what dates. Not allowed to say anything about job performance, disciplinary matters, not even the reason they left, as in whether they quit or were fired. None of it. I would never have imagined it was like that - but now that I know, there surely must be other states with similar rules.

They can answer the question "would you hire this person again." Either answering "no" to this question or refusing to provide any additional information is enough to disqualify an applicant.

To say that corporate America lacks empathy toward their employees is a gross understatement. Honestly, when I see how HR departments are being run and how companies treat people now I am super glad I'm retiring in a couple of years. So yeah, I get wanting to just walk away and not say a word.

OTOH - from a professional perspective, I can attest that burning bridges at previous employers is a bad idea and can affect you years down the road. I once worked at a place twenty years and things progressively got worse and worse and worse for employees. Layoffs were rampant and ugly and I saw the handwriting on the wall. When I left though, I didn't just burn bridges, I napalmed them.

Unfortunately, the company I left, bought out the company I went to about three years down the road and then certain people looked for every way they could to make me as miserable as possible. So - bad move. Also an unprofessional one in retrospect. Now, when I leave I smile politely, attend the exit interview, assure them I'm not moving to a competing position and tell them that I absolutely loved the people I thought were the worse fuck ups. That way they will promote them and I can get some modicum of revenge. :devilish:

I think I want this. I mean, it's a phone kickstand that folds up into a credit card. Adorable.
