I saw The Excellent Mr Dundee a month or two ago, and in it, there is a running gag that Chevy Chase keeps saying people in LA let him do whatever he wants because he won an Oscar (note: he never actually won an Oscar). The gag wasn't very funny at the time. Now that we see what they let Will Smith get away with, though, that gag is hilarious! That joke just needed some time to ripen.

I learned everything I know about wrestling from my old college room mate, who studied it under Captain Lou Albino. He recently made this sign, and held it up at a match, and botchamania noticed it, which is really cool (if you don't know botchamania, look it up, it's awesome)

The sign says Will Smith Works Stiff

Translation: Working stiff means you hit extra hard to make the match look good. If somebody says you work stiff, they are saying you prioritize presentation over safety. The opposite of working stiff is working loose.

This documentary just came out. I’m not sure if people outside Canada can have direct access to the NFB (National Film Board) but it’s a great site for other stuff too.

This version linked is the (I think) English sub one…

Chris Rock is a Scientologist. You know when I still worked at the DV shelter we spent a significant amount of time trying to teach people that it is never okay to hit somebody regardless of what they said to you...... assholes like Will Smith make the jobs of people working in anti-violence programs a lot harder.

I think you have it backwards. Pretty sure Chris is not a Scientologist, but Will and Jada Smith "definitely were but aren't Scientologists any more."

Uh huh. The Church (tm) makes it really easy for celebrities to just up and leave ......

Yeah, I don't know what to make of the Scientology stuff. It seems like even the fans who follow Will Smith aren't sure if they are or not. I think they probably are, because they built a Scientology school, but I also don't care. In the end, internet culture has already done everything it can to kill Scientology, and it isn't going anywhere. We can destroy Weinstein, but not Hubbard. Will Smith would be just another log on the fire, if they are Scientologists. If they are or if they aren't, Will still did a horrible thing, and should pay for it.

I would be happy if he lost the Oscar, even though I know he won't. Why does his bald wife want a bald statue sitting around the house, anyway? All it's gonna do is remind her of her fake bald disability. The academy would be doing her a favor by taking it away!

All of this is assuming that what happened wasn't scripted, of course. That's not even remotely a conspiracy theory. It's a legit concern. We all know the Oscars is one of the most scripted things in the universe, maybe second only to Broadway, or presidential debates hosted by CNN. At the ceremony, nobody acted like the slap was real, except Will Smith and Chris Rock, who performed it. If they actually punish Will Smith in a serious way, then maybe I'll accept that it wasn't a prat fall and some alligator tears. If they don't punish him, then we all know why. It's because they did scripted this fake slap as a desperate attempt to get somebody to care enough to watch the Oscars, because judging by the ratings I've seen the last few years, the Oscar isn't as bankable as it used to be. I'm like 80% certain that this whole thing is fake. It's all just another part of the swan song of American monoculture.

I just like watching bubble erect L. Ron Hubbard level conspiracy theories within the simple slap of a comedian.

LOL, you care enough to replay. "Don't care" doesn't mean disagree or agree. It just means you have nothing interesting to say. Your boringness has been noted... and it's going on your permanent record! LOL

I'm leaning more towards the slap being unscripted and real, since Smith resigned from the Academy. I'm kinda at a point where I don't think whether the slap is real or not actually matters, though. Maybe that's moving the goal posts, but IDK, I just feel like this event has grown beyond the point where reality matters. Complaining that it's fake is like going to a play and complaining it's all scripted, or that the violence in loony tunes isn't realistic. Debating whether or not it's scripted misses the point. The slap is just a fun, entertaining pop culture moment. Why let reality spoil a good time?

I wish Zsa Zsa Gabor was still around. I think her and Will Smith should have a slap-off for that Oscar statue. Bring Don King back from retirement, while we're at it, and have him promote it. It'll be the greatest event in MMA history!

The fact that Smith resigned from the Academy puts to bed any rational concern that the incident was scripted. No actor is going to take that as part a deal for a stunt to boost award ceremony TV ratings. The actors actually want the awards, they literally don't give a rusty f-word about the award show's ratings.

I think both of their dumb shit canceled each other out. Smith should have been escorted out.

[I don’t think Rock’s joke was that offensive, but it certainly wasn’t funny (or deserving of physical violence). About as original as asking a tall man about the weather up there. Maybe hosts of these sorts of shows will stop with the roasting type humour which I equate to verbal hazing.]

The worst in all this is how Jada somehow got the blame for “cheating”.WTF?!

Two men act out? Blame the woman…

I’m watching Star Wars IX.

I’ve missed (I think) the last4 or 5 episodes.

I don’t understand anything.
