I just checked out The Problem With Jon Stewart and it's just sad to see him like this. I mean, losing your comedic chops as you age, that's sad, but it happens. Even Jerry Lewis lost his touch as he got older. Stewart's show is just so bad on every level, though.
Episode 1: Opens in the writers room, where he's talking about how to sell this military VA story, about how we're not taking care of veterans, just like how we abandoned 9/11 first responders. I'm thinking, yeah, that's a good cause, but at the same time... he's explicitly telling us that he sees the audience as a thing to manipulate, like a horse to be broken or something. Why do I trust somebody who believes this? Whatever, it's probably a good cause. Then credits roll, and he comes on and does his pitch for the veterans who got sick because of burn pits in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the VA won't cover their sickness. Then he brings on the victims and has them tell their stories. It's very moving. It follows the exact same format as when he went to congress for 9/11 first responders. I totally agree with him! When he did this for the first responders,
I spent a weekend scrubbing through CSPAN footage to detail who was and wasn't there, and to this day, at least every few months, I tweet at a senator to ask them where they were when the 9/11 first responders needed them. So I'm all team Stewart on this. At the same time, he just laid it on way too thick. The show goes on for nearly 50 minutes. Yeah, I'll support this cause, but it's just not a format I care to watch. Maybe it will get better, though...
Episode 2: This week's topic is conservatives who shout that freedom isn't free, then refuse to wear masks or get shots, and become terrorists to attack the capitol. I think everybody here knows I agree with Stewart on this. At the same time, he's bitching about stuff we've all been bitching about for two years straight, and I don't think he brings anything new to the conversation. The guy obviously can't read a room if he thinks he's saying something new here. Then he brings on a panel! After laying it on super thick for 20 minutes, he thinks what this conversation needs is another 30 minutes of panel discussion. The panelists are more diverse than you will see on CNN or Fox or MSNBC, so if you are into panel shows, this might be your jam, but to me it's still just another a lame panel show in a sea of senseless panel show bullshit. Who in their right mind wakes up one morning and says "You know what this country needs right now? One more hour long panel show, every week, where the audience is treated to highly opinionated people, being highly opinionated!"
I don't think I can keep watching this. I prefer to remember Jon for the great comedian he was, rather than the guy I see on Apple+ right now. I'll probably check out season 2, if they cut the time down to 30 minutes. This show reminds me of season 4 of The Twilight Zone, where they expanded the show to an hour long format, and it just didn't work. Sterling was a genius for 30 minutes, but he can't keep it up for a full hour. Neither can Stewart.
