I've been looking for possible derivations of "nonce," and its origins seem lost in history. Google and ChatGPT, presumably taking their lead from Wikipedia, (which expresses doubts about the derivation, calling it a "backronym") , suggest it may be an acronym from "not on normal courtyard exercise," which I'd never heard before and find extremely unconvincing since the Prison Service would refer to inmates as being "on Rule 43" (Rule 47 post 1999), which concerns inmates segregated for various reasons, including their own protection.

I'd heard that it was derived from "nonsense," as in a nonsense offence rather than a normal one like robbery, GBH, drugs and so on, but that sounds dubious too. "Nonce" was also an old dialect word in some parts of the country, including where I'm from, meaning a fool or a worthless person, but that's all history now, and I think it's probably coincidental.

The OED has the first reference in 1970 and relates it to either nance from Nancy Boy or nonce, a word in the Lincolnshire dialect meaning good for nothing.

Whatever happened to consequences? or simply owning up to our mistakes? Maybe it has always been this way with those who adhere to the philosophy of “Might makes right”, where admitting one is wrong is thought of as weak. They are just emboldened at the moment, and not just in the UK. Hopefully, the pendulum will swing back soon.

All of this was predicted - repeatedly and loudly. The warnings delivered were stark, yet were dismissed at the time as hysterical, naive, Anti-American or, as per Boris Johnson, part of that dreaded “global wokerati.”

The fact of the matter is that Donald Trump did not suddenly become volatile, nor did he just recently discover coercion as a tool. He did not wake up one morning in Mar-a-Lago and think to himself “yes, I’ll start treating allies as leverage to get what I want.”

What we’re seeing now is who he has always been, unplugged, unfiltered and without guard rails. It was visible from the outset - and this is why the silence from his cheerleaders is now so utterly deafening.

Edinburgh tomb of philosopher David Hume vandalised with ‘satanic’ symbols

The tomb of the philosopher David Hume and two other memorials at a historic cemetery in Edinburgh have been vandalised with “disturbing occult-style paraphernalia”.

A tour guide made the discovery at the Old Calton burial ground. It included a drawing of a naked woman pointing a bloodied knife at a baby with a noose around its neck, and coded writing on red electrical tape attached to the David Hume mausoleum and two nearby memorial stones.


The guide emailed photographs of the vandalism to Edinburgh council and described the symbols as “satanic”.
