I don't know what Maggi Hambling, the sculptor, was thinking of -- it's not worked, whatever it was.

I see what she means, and I understand her interpretation, which was not unlike mine. But I got there by trying to understand what the sculpter was trying to do, so I experienced it as the solution to a rather irritating puzzle rather than anything else.

I didn't want it to be portraiture, necessarily, but I just don't think the object works aesthetically.

I have 2 problems with the Hambling statue honoring Wollstonecraft.

1. I don't understand it. Except for the base, which explicitly states who it's meant for, I don't see anything but a molten slag of metal with a dinky nude on top. In fact, until the woman appears it doesn't even look like a human was involved in the creation of it; it's dross from a blast furnace.

2. I know art is subjective, but...it's ugly.

Very shiny, though.
