The distaste of AI is starting to bear fruit. (Sorry, Apple pun).

Many Procreate users can breathe a sigh of relief now that the popular iPad illustration app has taken a definitive stance against generative AI. “We’re not going to be introducing any generative AI into our products,” Procreate CEO James Cuda said in a video posted to X. “I don’t like what’s happening to the industry, and I don’t like what it’s doing to artists.”

We need to build a time travel machine so we can send you people back to the 1980s and have you start the AI era back then.

We haven't started it yet. ChatGPT and Dall-E and the rest are not AI.

Just because the definition of AI has changed a LOT in like the last 5 years. Like when that Commodore book came out, AI just meant a computer's ability to derive that if A=B and B=C then A=C.

In fact I'd say that's been the definition all along until very recently. Like, people used to describe a game's "AI" - as in, how the characters moved around and reacted to you inside the game - as good or bad, but they were never implying that the game characters were actual people with opinions and feelings and stuff. The latter is a movie definition of AI that working computer scientists never took seriously until a few years ago when some very rich movie fans started giving them lots of money.

I was there when the Commodore 64 came out, and nobody in the industry seriously considered Eliza or expert systems or markov chain generators "AI". They thought that some sufficiently complex expert system might qualify, but no.

They were the results of the AI research of the time, but they weren't AI any more than a Fisher space pen or Velcro was a spacecraft just because they were spinoffs of the space program.

I will accept that calling that whole area of research "AI" was marketing, but Weizenbaum was ALWAYS careful to tell people that Eliza wasn't a person and was *distressed* when people treated the program that way.

There was none of this bullshit of some Google scientist claiming his program was sentient and quitting his job or getting fired over it.

Screw that noise, I am just going to become a quiet backer of Apple. "Here is a hundred thousand dollars, I have zero requirements or requests, just do everything like I was not here except slip be 1% once a year."

Time for software developers to start thinking about a career change. According to the Amazon cloud chief.

During a leaked "fireside chat," the head of Amazon Web Services (AWS) Matt Garman suggested that in as little as two years, human developers may need to learn different skills to make way for artificial intelligence coders.

"If you go forward 24 months from now, or some amount of time — I can't exactly predict where it is — it's possible that most developers are not coding," he exclaimed in audio leaked to Business Insider.
Just a month after overseeing hundreds of AWS job cuts in April, Garman was promoted to CEO. With that pedigree of rapid ascension amid layoffs, he seems perfectly poised to deliver that kind of pep talk to his assembled employees.

"Coding is just kind of like the language that we talk to computers. It's not necessarily the skill in and of itself," the CEO said. "The skill in and of itself is like, how do I innovate? How do I go build something that's interesting for my end users to use?"

This is all true. The discussions centered more on limitations and ethical responsibilities rather than pie in the sky positronic intelligence. Teh bulk of grading was focused on hooman interface and backward chaining because we would never say that "it worked" just because it reached an expected conclusion one time, at programming camp, before more branches and data were incorporated.

Alexa, make me a sandwich.

Reuters is reporting that Amazon will no longer use its own large language models as the new Alexa's primary driver. Early versions of gen AI Alexa based on Amazon’s AI models “struggled for words, sometimes taking six or seven seconds to acknowledge a prompt and reply,” Reuters said, citing one of its sources. Without specifying versions or features used, Reuters' sources said Claude outperformed proprietary software.

After Stanford Internet Observatory researcher David Thiel found links to child sexual abuse materials (CSAM) in an AI training dataset tainting image generators, the controversial dataset was immediately taken down in 2023.

Now, the LAION (Large-scale Artificial Intelligence Open Network) team has released a scrubbed version of the LAION-5B dataset called Re-LAION-5B and claimed that it "is the first web-scale, text-link to images pair dataset to be thoroughly cleaned of known links to suspected CSAM."
Oh, "known "links. Nice lawyered up phrasing there, LAION team.
