I don't understand why people like this exist.

He clearly understands the point of the comic because he explains it correctly in the beginning. And he spends the whole article talking about what a horrible idea this thing he's doing is even as he's doing it, it's terrible, it's bad, it's a dumb idea, insert lazy Jeff Goldblum meme here, and then his conclusion is

I feel I should try to bring things to some Big and Meaningful conclusion here, but I’m not sure there is one.
Well no, there's a very obvious conclusion here actually, but it's very unflattering to him so he pretends not to see it.

Humanity enjoys the creation of almost anything, even what might lead to our downfall. Ball has met the seductive nature of creating something like the torment nexus, and he is us.

I was being sarcastic, which is not quite the same as ironic.

The worst thing about AI? That stupid Samsung ad where the guy adds ‘way too much sugar’ to his pasta sauce

At a time of intense, bitter division, it’s heartwarming when something brings us together. No, not “briefly becoming experts in lawn tennis”, or “being too hot” – that stupid Samsung advert where the guy “added way too much sugar to my gochujang pasta sauce” and asks his phone for help.

If, by the greatest good fortune, you have managed to dodge it, Google Gemini (an AI “assistant”) suggests he makes “tasty cookies” out of his sugary sauce. Instead of throwing his phone out of the window in holy rage, the youth seems inexplicably enthused (“Sweet!”) and follows its frankly inadequate instructions – add butter, mix, bake for 10 minutes – before wandering off with a cookie, apparently happy with this bizarre outcome

Commercials for AI really show how much of a different planet its proponents live on.

Apple's AI commercials were super bizarre too, they appeared to be suggesting that AI's best use case was helping terrible people be more terrible. There was one where a woman realizes she forgot her husband's birthday or something when their daughters start giving him their actual gifts, and she doesn't have anything to give him so she has her phone's AI slap together a photo slideshow in 5 seconds and interrupts the gift-giving by handing her husband the phone so he can watch it, and this is shown to be like a hero moment where her AI slideshow is the best and most thoughtful gift he gets. So so weird and awful.

The idea of using AI for "thoughful" things is so gross. Like, even a shitty homemade slideshow would be more meaningful than some AI nonsense.

I have entered a new level of lazy. I needed to make an image square, which I could have done in Photoshop in 2 seconds by expanding the canvas, but I didn't feel like opening Photoshop so i had ChatGPT do it
Somewhere in Adobe, some executive is saying, "We need some of this AI stuff! PUT SOME AI STUFF IN IT!"

"Sir, we've actually had AI tools for quite some time now ...."

"PUT IN MOAR!"

This why you need ImageMagick!

ImageMagick – Mastering Digital Image Alchemy
winget install -e --id ImageMagick.ImageMagick

convert -resize 1024x1024! image.foo outputimage.foo

AI and Marco Rubio. Yeah, I'd call that "artificial" intelligence.

A Marco Rubio impostor is using AI voice to call high-level officials (archive.today)
An impostor pretending to be Secretary of State Marco Rubio contacted foreign ministers, a U.S. governor and a member of Congress by sending them voice and text messages that mimic Rubio’s voice and writing style using artificial intelligence-powered software, according to a senior U.S. official and a State Department cable obtained by The Washington Post.

U.S. authorities do not know who is behind the string of impersonation attempts but they believe the culprit was probably attempting to manipulate powerful government officials “with the goal of gaining access to information or accounts,” according to a cable sent by Rubio’s office to State Department employees.
Using both text messaging and the encrypted messaging app Signal, which the Trump administration uses extensively, the impostor “contacted at least five non-Department individuals, including three foreign ministers, a U.S. governor, and a U.S. member of Congress,” said the cable, dated July 3.
