Strawberry is conducting a survey of the most used mesh bodies and heads. It is for both male and female human avatars.

Berry’s 2018 Mesh Body Parts Survey

Note that there are checkboxes so that you can submit more than one answer per vote. I voted for the bodies and heads I own and enjoy the most.

As expected, the results so far are dominated by Maitreya for women's bodies, clocking in above 40%. It's only slightly more competitive for the men's bodies, between Signature and Belleza with Signature in the lead.

Heads are more competitive for the women with Catwa and Lelutka taking up half the market, followed by LAQ and Genus, but Catwa is eating everyone's lunch when it comes to the men's heads, taking up almost 50% of the market by itself.

But the sample size is small, so let's see what the real numbers are. Please only vote once.

SL must be so hard for newbies these days with all the mesh parts and the attendant HUDs. And expensive to get started.
Yes, I think it's led to fewer newbies being on the grid and invested in the game. It can cost around $8-10K in Lindens to have a decent mesh avatar. That doesn't include shoes, hair, and a rental. Easier to just wear the system mesh body for a while, and give up from boredom/exhaustion.

I think a lot of people who come in via a friend already know somewhat but...at least in some places...much of the Steamlands, Faery Crossing, Frank’s, at Burn2 events, for instance...it’s still perfectly fine to wear a classic avatar, flexi hair, prim fur, sculpt stuffs etc.
More people into full mesh are the ones that usually blog and vlog so you see more of it there and in many ‘fashionable’ places, (and at events whose entire goal is to sell you the newest stuff) sure!
But it’s not quite as ubiquitous as you might think.
Neither is disdain for templates, applier or system layers, flexi skirts for dancing, etc.
I go many places, edit many people, and I see a big mix of things still.

Those Genus heads will catch up to the competition this time next year I reckon. There just seems to be a heap of creators releasing appliers for it as of late.

I wouldn't doubt it. Many moons ago we had money trees and tons of gaming (casinos etc) and as a new person back then it was a bit confusing I can't even imagine how hard it is for the new peeps now. I don't think there's money trees anymore (don't quote me on that, I might be wrong).

Well, Strawberry is now Strawberry Linden, so she won't be blogging anymore.

AFAIK, The new TMP has the same problems as the old. This is what I've gleaned.

The HUD is useful only as long as their webserver is up and running. If they shut it down, your TMP body will effectively be bricked. Other obstacles include pricing (you can get all 3 Bellaza bodies for less than the TMP); incompatibility (old TMP clothing doesn't fit and any other clothing doesn't fit) and 'exclusivity'. That is, no one is making clothing for TMP and who knows if they'll give out dev kits. They were pretty stingy with the last iteration.

So many pitfalls!

My main has an excellent Classic skin and I won't be meshing her anytime soon, just hair shopping. But I have an alt who doesn't have a decent skin, and decent Classic skin doesn't seem to be a thing anymore. I've been away a long time. If I jumped in the popular, stupid, easy end of the pool with a mesh body and head who would be the best?

Personally, I've liked my maitreya body. it's the easiest to find clothing and shoes for. I've rarely seen anything newish offered that doesn't have a Maitreya size. The shape stays very close to my old system shape(s). That is the shape doesn't change much due to mesh curves. There's also a plethora of sexytime addons that all will have Maitreya fit. so that's a consideration if that's important to you.

Heads are going to be a personal choice, but I've tried Catwa and Lelutka. So far, I like the Lelutka better, enough to buy it on 3 AV's. Catwa I could never get to look quite right for me. I have a couple of freebie / low cost Altamura bodies and heads. They look pretty good and are close to maitreya for clothing, but not everything will work with it. Plus the HUD isnt as easy to use imo than maitreya and lelutka.

But here's what I did. I found a face that I liked, that seemed like 'me' and bought that shape just for the face. A shape made for a specific head. Then buy that head and using my new 'face shape', transposed my old body numbers to the new shape.

Really all I can say is demo demo demo.

Oh, and Lumae always has system skins. If you go to the store, there's a group gift that has system skins and (almost) all appliers (head and body).
That may help you too. Those body/head specific appliers will work on the demos. So, you can demo various bodies and heads without having those 'demo' lines on the skin. Also her base skins are on sale as she's re-branding for 100L. She also has some head specific skins, so those -do not- have system skins.

Oh, another consideration, updates. As far as I can tell, lelutka (I got a recent update for my Lelutka that pushed me to buy it on other AVs. The expresions are so damn cute..), catwa and miatreya should all have a free updates when BoM is finally deployed. I've had altamura since Dec 2017, and I've heard there might have been updates, but have never received any. I can't speak for SLink, Bellaza, Logo or Genus, as I don't own them nor am I in any of their groups.

Lelutka and LAQ are my heads of choice. At least with LAQ the HUD purchase is separate from the heads so you're not cranking out 5k every time you want a new head for the same basic functionality. But Lelutka's HUD is still the best, hands down.

One of my friends bought the new one. I demo'd it and this body has always been my favorite. However, I won't be buying the new one. It does come with a deformer which you put on and you can wear belleza, maitreya and the TMP clothes, however it is not perfect and you can not demo the deformer. If you want to demo the body you have to go to their store to do it. You can either buy the new legacy body or if you already own the deluxe body you can upgrade that one for 2500L, but from what i understand if you do the classic upgrade it is not the new legacy body it just upgrades the classic one with the new hud and such. But I am not totally sure on that one as I have no plans to invest in this body further.

I went to check it out. The fact that it is not Omega compliant and still has this funky shopping system is a huge turnoff.

I bought the original body when it went on clearance sale and I haven't worn it. It's pretty but getting skins for it is difficult if you want to match your head perfectly. So it languishes in my inventory. I suppose I could try the built in skins, of which there are plenty, but still.

Either way, this is a hard pass. No compatibility, and the fact that I couldn't even demo it at home? What a bunch of garbage. Nahhhh.

I really hate this new thing with some stores, and not being able to take demo's. I refused to buy a Genus head until the Skin Fair when I was able to actually take one with me to demo. Having to demo in their stark white crowded inworld store was annoying and frustrating. I was super excited when I was able to demo all 3 heads at 'home' during the Fair. I ended up with the "strong' face. I never would have bought it if I had to keep demo'ing in the store.
