My profile page says I have two posts. Below that are the words "No posts here!". I have no idea how to find these two posts I posted.
Looks like it's under "Posts and Replies"

Yes I’m gonna do this with an account on a more nondescript server than social.linux.pizza because damn. The verbiage says that follows et al will “migrate” with me. This is more confusing than a farcasting network.
Let me know if you ever get unconfused. I might take the plunge.

One feature that Mastodon DOESN'T have, which people should be aware of, is private messaging.

It has a "DM" function which is a filter that keeps your post from showing up in anyone else's feed except the target's Home feed, but that's it.

The devs say they're working on a future E2EE feature but at present they say if anyone wants to exchange really private information they should be doing it on an E2E encrypted messaging app, not via Mastodon (or any other social media service).
Mastodon has Direct Messages (DMs), there are two ways to make them happen:

-Create a normal message, set its privacy to "Direct" and then @ mention whomever you want to receive the message. If you mention more than one person it becomes a group chat. This works on all apps and versions of Mastodon.

OR

-If you're logged in through the website, or if you're using a third party app, you can click on the "..." menu on a post or a person's profile and select Direct Message. This then automatically creates a direct message just like the one in the previous method. You can also look at your previous DMs by clicking on the envelope or the "Direct Message" link in the menu.

The official apps don't currently have any specific DM features, but you can use the first method in them and it works fine.

The end result of both methods is exactly the same.

Eh, I never used DMs on Twitter anyway aside from getting looped into spam group messages that I would then block.

I am on mastodon.lol

I put "michaeldaniel" into search, under people, and was not surprised that nothing came up.
I'm also on lol (lol), and see his listing - whether I place a @ in front or not.

Oh, technology.

How do invitations work? I've requested a couple because the admins have those server pages down to avoid SPAM signups during The Great Twurge Migration. But I don't know whether to expect something to appear in my feed, on my profile, or in my email inbox.

Sorry I don't know how they work, either. You're the first person I've seen mention invites on mastadon, but I'm learning how it works, too. I think you might want to give it a few days before moving, though. The network is showing some strange behavior right now, so maybe moving your account might be a maneuver for a time when things are more calm.

I think the profile search is down right now. I'm having problems looking up free. It's throwing a 503 when I try, so it's not a typo, it really can't find the database. If I put Free's profile in manually, I can see their profile, but I can't follow Free, because it won't take my profile address, because I think it can't see the database on my instance. I have no problems following back those of you who have followed me already, though.

There an "invite people" link in the account settings that allows us to create a link that someone can use to sign up for that server. It can be set for a number of uses and/or to expire after a specified time. Then one has to manually deliver the link to intended recipients.

Thank Heaven it's not some convoluted archaic mechasystem such as "Enter the username and press the button to send an invitation link to the email account listed in their profile."

EDIT: I just realized the guy who I thought was an Admin on mastadon isn't an admin. He's just a troll, and he got me good! Mastadon probably isn't a crypto mining scam. I'm just dumb.

Interesting post about the state of the network, from an admin at mastadon.social:

sorry that the servers are running slowly this week, guys!! the web interface uses your cpu to mine Ethereum in the background while you post, and we are trying to figure out a different way to do that directly instead of through the API to reduce the burden.
please continue posting and leave your browser/app open in the meantime!

I don't know if all mastadon instances mine etherium like this, or if it's just mastadon.social, or if it's jukst a common thing that is done by mastadon instances, but isn't done as a rule. If mastadon.xyz is using my CPU like this, I think I'll back away from the platform. I don't want any part of web sites using my processing power like that.

Here is the admin's reply when I asked them about crypto mining. They make it sound like it's a common thing for mastadon servers to do, as if all major mastadon servers do this, with various coins.

good Q. it depends on the administration team for each individual instance. some instances are focused on utter meme coins like Doge, which i would (and do) criticize in a personal capacity.
but (in a professional capacity) that is their prerogative and their choice.
it's not up to us to dictate what crypto coin they focus on -- it would defeat the purpose of decentralization.

I've been digging around, but I can't find any evidence in the TOS that mastadon.xyz does this, so it looks like my instance may be safe? I don't know. I"ve asked around a bit. If I find out anything new I"ll let you guys know.

For now, though, I strongly suspect that mastadon is a crypto scam, so this might not be the social network you are looking for.

Now I just need a loaf of bread and some off brand soup and it will be like a charity box.

The whole "toot" thing has me singing the beans song...

" beans beans, the musical fruit, the more you eat the more you toot, the more you toot the better you feel, beans beans at every meal"....

toot toot

Its not, and won't be.

More likely its some troll or coordinated group of trolls trying to push it because they know part of the reason people are fleeing Twitter is they hate Musk's crypto obsession.
