That has resulted in some understandably messy problems. For instance, legacy versions of Adobe products like Photoshop use some 32-bit licensing components and installers, meaning they won’t work after you upgrade. Not even Adobe’s uninstaller will work post-Catalina upgrade because that, too, is a 32-bit component.
So you upgrade, find out you can't run something, try to uninstall it... Ouch.

I wish there had been a better ad campaign about it as a lot of people started freaking out all at once. In addition to the normal stuff when an OS is updated they also dropped support for 32 bit apps and tightened security at the same time. Right now I have not upgraded any of my machines but spun up two virtual machines: one with the current version of the OS and one with Catalina. That way I can test various things before making the jump.

Interesting. Ubuntu made noises about dropping 32-bit support, and its userbase went up in arms until Canonical relented. Did Apple make any indication that their newest OS would not have 32-bit support? And will this end up biting Apple in the butt?

Apple first announced that it would ultimately wind down support for 32-bit apps more than a year and a half ago, when it began pushing alerts to macOS High Sierra users that 32-bit software was “unsupported.” The apps still worked, but with Catalina’s official unveiling back in June at WWDC, Apple made the eventual discontinuation official. With the launch of Catalina, 32-bit apps no longer function.
But come on, who pays attention to that shit. They could have provided 5 years prep of news, notices, warning, alerts and pop-ups, and it would have still taken a portion of the user base by surprise.

Apple did mention it a year ago and had popups but they have a history of pulling stuff away before people are ready. Usually they provide some sort of a way to support it though, like telling people about USB floppies and CD drives. While 32 bit is old windows and other OSes have not dared to dry and remove support for it as everyone knows there is software out there still used where the company went bust years ago.
