The UAE have just sentenced a British academic to life imprisonment for what they say is espionage.

Ministers privately admitted that London had been blindsided by the action from a friendly state. “They are totally out of order,” one said.

Relations have been strained by criticism in Britain of the UAE’s human rights record and its role in the war in Yemen. The UAE is also angered by Britain’s co-operation with Qatar, a country being blockaded by the rest of the Gulf. The UAE and Saudi Arabia believe that Qatar is too close to Iran.
