I mean.... on one hand, we have a fascist and rapist, on the other hand we have some democrats who aren't perfect! If Trump was held to the same standard the media held Kamala Harris to, we'd be in a very different situation now.
Oh, sure - if I had to choose between those two options, I'd pick Newsom in a heartbeat as well.

I'm just glad that I don't have to make that kind of choice.

A lot can happen in that period. Like falling deep into authoritarianism or seeing some sort of uprising.

While Newsome and his staff are meeting the moment, don't forget he hasn't been a stellar governor, and would probably make a disastrous president - and he will run, no doubt about that. His views on social issues, i.e. homelessness and trans issues, are abysmal at best. We can all cheer him on, but don't lose sight of that.

I'm convinced no one can become Governor of California without getting compromising on some really tough issues. Our track record with them has been far from stellar. No one with that much power is going to be a squeaky clean. Same goes for billionaires.

But ten ways to Sunday, I'll take someone who at least TRIES to do the right thing most of the time over someone who adamantly refuses to even consider it.

Newsom's strategy with the redistricting plan in California is breaking GOP leaders' brains.

Johnson Says Newsom Is Insulting Voters by Letting Them Vote (archive.today)
Republicans want to demonize Gavin Newsom’s effort to give his party some extra U.S. House seats in the 2026 midterms. But they have a bit of a messaging problem. After all, Newsom is very explicitly responding to the power grab Donald Trump demanded in Texas (as indicated by the formal name for the legislation the California governor is pushing to authorize a ballot initiative in November: the Election Rigging Response Act).

Beyond the fact that Trump did it first, Republicans can’t really get too pious about what Newsom is doing because it reflects the reality that blue states, by and large, have been much more likely than red states to let independent commissions rather than partisan politicians draw their congressional and state legislative districts. Many Democrat-led states have embedded these practices in their laws and constitutions. Indeed, that’s why California has to hold a special election: to enable its legislature to do what Texas’s (and probably Florida’s, Missouri’s, and Indiana’s) can do as an exercise in pure partisan power.

Harris said end of July this year she will not run for Governor of California, keeping that option open. AFAIK since then she never ruled out running for presidency again.

This is more recent:

I don’t think she will run in 2028, but anything could happen. I love her, but hope she doesn’t run.

It would be a mistake. She is too lukewarm.
She put herself through a living hell fighting the GOP. Why do it again? I think she gets a pass right now. She siezed the moment but it wasn't the right moment.

Had 20 million actually voted instead of staying home, we might be having a different discussion.

Yeah, I don't much like Newsom, don't really trust him, but I DO love the way he is trolling Trump. And if Newsom ends up as the Dem presidential nominee, I'll still vote for him over any Republican.
