Hurricane Helene updates: Death toll surpasses 230 as rescue efforts continue

More than 230 people have been killed from Hurricane Helene, which unleashed devastation across Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee.

At least 52 people have died from Hurricane Helene, according to The Associated Press. Fatalities were confirmed in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia.

So apparently "being prepared" just isn't a thing anymore. I'm gobsmacked at the sheer number of people who are stranded in North Carolina due to road conditions, who are reporting they have no food or water and are in desperate need of supplies.

Free pass to people who lost their freaking house because it was flooded or swept away, and sympathy galore for everyone frankly, because no one should have to go through this. But for god's sake, people, if you live on a mountain with roads that can be swept away by torrential rains and flash floods, YOU NEED A BACKUP PLAN. Not one put together before a specific emergency, like a named hurricane, but always.

Along with a lot of really vile posts about Harris & Biden, spreading misinformation about the NC National Guard deployments. Apparently some 800 guards were deployed overseas a day after Helene, which triggered people's America First nationalism. No matter how many times other people posted that this was 800 out of 10,700 national guard, the raging continued.

There were also "Where's the president in all of this" complaints about Biden, ignoring the fact that 1) due to states' rights, the federal government has to wait for the state governor to invite them to help, and 2) the last thing the states need is a presidential visit in the middle of an emergency.

The complaints about lack of media coverage are a little more on point. But there again, news doesn't write itself. The last thing the affected states need is dozens of journalists and camera crews flooding the area.

I can easily imagine news reporters - most of them today being very young - walking into the rubble of a family's destroyed home and holding a mic up to a devastated resident, "How do you feel about this?"
