Not sure this idea is going to gain much traction

Or I don't know, just spit balling here, but maybe we can tax workers on a sort of sliding scale, based on what they earn, so that low-income workers get little to no taxes, and large income earners get taxed more. And then those taxes are used - at least in part (don't wanna be greedy here!), to help the lowest-income workers meet some kind of basic standard of living. What would we call it...

Ah yes, the progressive tax scale. No doubt that evil, evil word, and the ideas behind it, is an anathema to all that is good in the world.

I mean, Scrooge does explain that there are workhouses and prisons supported by his taxes in his reasoning for never supporting charity. Scrooge doesn't want to pay his taxes anymore, either.

“A big chunk of people have disconnected themselves from the face-to-face world yet are still leading a full economic life. That means remote workers are contributing less to the infrastructure of the economy whilst still receiving its benefits. That is a big problem for the economy.”
Unbelievable....

I counter propose that we get a REBATE for all the taxes and fees we pay for transportation and infrastructure that we're not using. All those reduced maintenance and support costs.

When you consider the long-term implications for the asset value of your commercial property portfolio world-wide, you realise desperate times require desperate measures.

...A White House spokeswoman, said: “Unnamed sources attacking a family’s decision about what is best for their kids in the middle of a pandemic is shameful. As is true for all families, schooling choices and education are deeply personal decisions and they owe no one,
I love how they simultaneously use t he pandemic to justify their behavior yet take no responsibility whatsoever for their behavior's effect upon others.

Just like daddy.

There's something particularly creepy about the sanctimonious way an spokeswoman for a would-be authoritarian government should seek to justify in terms of individual freedom and parental choice conduct that amounts to sociopathic recklessness in the face of warnings from the school about the danger their irresponsibility posed to other children at the school, their parents and families, and the teachers and staff and their families.

WTF are they opening cruises again already? The pandemic in the US is worse than ever!
I wonder what the itinerary was -- there's not that many places that are open to tourism, at least not the sort of short stays associated with a cruise ship

The Washington Post has a list of the various restrictions applied by particular islands here, and I don't think passengers would get to spend much time ashore during their cruise.

Doesn't augur well for mass vaccination, does it ?
Nope, though I think there's a significant difference in that there's already an existing system to deliver flu and other vaccinations, medical screening and the like.

You must be used, as am I, to receiving letters from the NHS inviting you to make an appointment with your GP or somewhere else local for various tests and screening, presumably because the NHS computer systems automatically flag people who qualify, so a lot of the infrastructure is already there.

The task of identifying all patients registered at a particular practice who are aged between (e.g.) 70 and 80 and offering them vaccinations over the next n weeks, and then scheduling follow-up booster doses as necessary, and then the exercise some weeks later for those aged between 60 and 70, must be a far simpler exercise than contact-tracing, I'd have thought.
