I actually prefer shredded cabbage on my tacos, I know, it's sacrilege but I just like it better. I also always shred the stuff myself because I'm too cheap to pay double for those bags of shredded stuff.

Problem is cyclospora is a parasite that forms a tough outer shell that clings to fibrous surfaces. It's hard to wash off, and it's even resistant to chemical cleaners. Washing vegetables alone can't guarantee they're removal. It's better to cook (or at least thoroughly heat) veggies and kill 'em dead. In the case of lettuce, buy whole heads instead of bagged (even "pre-washed") leaves, and toss the outer layers.

A lot of the veggies here come out of greenhouses where they grow under very controlled circumstances.
Thankfully that parasite is not an issue over here (yet).
