Well... the Guardian has an article about words of the year, and among the words of the year which hasn't penetrated my consciousness until now is the idea of being cancelled from social media. Now, I'm not sure I have ever been...whatever the opposite of being cancelled is... but I followed the link in the article to "Am I cancelled?" It confirmed I had indeed been cancelled... and I thought other people might also be interested to know if they, too, had been cancelled. The next question has to be "do I care?" and the answer is a resounding no, it just made me giggle.

I think I’ve been canceled on Twitter by a certain clique but it came about because of sticking up for another group of people - at some point it’s all just high school mean girl squabbling. At my age, this has to stay below the range of my attention. But I did also giggle.

Once popular, now shunned. This is a phenomenon of your peers, or fans. They are in control of this.

There's another concept that is a phenomenon of the platforms themselves: shadow banning. Shunned by the platform. It looks to you like you are being heard, and a few people do hear you, but for the most part your posts are not shown to the people you think are seeing them. This is essentially gaslighting.

The big social media platforms use an algorithm that handles scaling in this way: Your post is shown to a few people. If it is well received (people comment or like or whatever), it is shown to more people, and if it continues to be successful it is shown to more and more people. On the other hand, if your post fails to attract a following, they stop showing it to people.

Shadow banning is when the platform throttles the number of people who see your content more than normal.

I remember those guys. They just couldn’t believe they were so obnoxious they were being killfiled by individuals.

Usenet doesn't have a scaling algorithm that can be manipulated. Visibility is not controlled by the platform, and in fact there isn't anyone in control of the platform. Anyone operating a usenet site would see the global kill file if it existed.

Reddit sorta does have an algorithm that could be manipulated, but manipulation would be obvious, as their score blurring algorithm is only good for small adjustments. Facebook, Twitter and Youtube, though, are black boxes. I have reason to believe Facebook has shadow banned me but no proof. There is lots of discussion of the youtube algorithm but I have no personal experience with it. And Twitter I barely use.

Actually there is such an optional mechanism in existence. I've run years ago a news server which was listed under top1000.org, which is quite easily done on an average dedicated host server nowadays by the way and cheap if you discard all binaries. Otherwise you'll need a fortune.

My site was using INN as NNTP server engine together with some cycbuffs as storage, plus some additional tools on top.

One of the tools on top I ran was Cancelmoose, or NoCeM. Although this package is in maintenance for over a decade, some news administrators are maintaining Cancelmoose feeds to filter out especial annoying peoples, spam and other nasty stuff. The Cancelmoose's control messages are distributed in dedicated news groups; you just have to configure your copy to listen to it.

CM is entirely opt-in only, but on some things quite a got sent gift.

I have three twitter accounts, I had three Google Plus accounts, and so on. Always three there are, a teacher, a student... no I mean my real name, Argent, and my sock puppet.

Except Facebook. They closed me down but good. Perhaps I shouldn't use an SL account name for my Facebook alts.
