Patch Linden gave a great opening speech last night. I think everybody teared up a little when he mentioned Ebbe.

I get the feeling the big announcement he has for lab gab is going to have to do with some new fantasy themed linden homes. I think they are going to try to reproduce the Bellissaria successes with a fantasy theme, because, you know... SL18B is full of fantasy linden homes that I've never seen before. They look elven.

So far I've had time to get an info card at the Welcome area and then visited the Burn2 exhibit for about 10 minutes. Hopefully I'll be able to visit some today.

Yesterday I went to the central stage for about 10 minutes.

It is weird: people paying tons for mesh bodies, clothes, shapes, skins in SL and then you are standing there in the middle of about 50 clouds, including a performer who was something grey with a guitar at a very low frame rate.

Why do they keep organizing this stuff, when the platform clearly isn't capable to support it?
And why am I one of the many fools who still try and visit it? As an experienced SL-er I really should know better.

Maybe I go and see a few exhibitions today.

The new Bellisseria theme will be fantasy.
The plants, trees, fences and other decorations are very nice.
The houses, pretty much without the right fantasy IMHO.

One of the constants of SL is the need to keep throwing better hardware at the viewer.

And why am I one of the many fools who still try and visit it? As an experienced SL-er I really should know better.

In my case, I'm addicted no matter how badly SL performs. When I first joined SL, I was using a Gateway 500sp+ laptop with a 2.3GHz Celeron II with 512MB of RAM and Intel GM852 integrated graphics. I rarely saw frame rates above 5fps and the viewer could crash if you looked at it funny especially the 1.13 viewer we nicknamed "The Release of Satan"

Now I've got a desktop with a core i7 4790 that'll boost up to 4GHz, 32GB of RAM and a GTX1650, I see higher frame rates most of the time, but SL can STILL drop to single-digit fps at times.

Maybe I go and see a few exhibitions today.

Went Saturday morning and mercifully few others were there then, used my most minimal avatar (a ghost made of two prims). Pretty much just scanned the place so likely missed more than half of it. Saw the Ebbe statue and another memorial to him, the SL history timeline dome, and it just seemed to me it was mostly Mole build with a spattering of small builds around it by actual SL residents. Liked the fantasy feel of the Mole build area, was at first impressed by the fantasy themed Linden Homes though now I think you could easily get the same effect by just dressing up older styles. The resident builds I rarely take more than a passing glance at, of the about dozen builds on each region each is just about guaranteed to have more than a dozen textures each to load.

SL18B was / is a challenge for my equipment! I could walk around and see builds pretty good, sometimes I saw avatars, sometimes I didn't, but the biggest issue was notecards not rezzing, pop ups taking forever to pop up and snapshots refusing to download. Here's a snapshot of a crowd at a live concert I went to.
