Well actually since this was easy to bypass with a new account/reading Twitter unlocked its probably just getting rid of a bad idea, who knows.

If someone is specifically bonkers about you, no, it doesn't help. But for the vast majority just looking for a "lib to own" or whatever they are in a target rich environment and are unlikely to go to the bother.

They stayed on Twitter to "own the libs" and Musk is rewarding them by making victims choose to accept the abuse or leave the platform. That may conflict with his "everything app" ambitions but long term planning is not his strength.

This comes alongside two community notes slapped on to both comments—one of which helpfully points out that both Apple and Google have specific guidelines for this sort of thing. Specifically, Apple requires "The ability to block abusive users from the service", while Google requires "an in-app system for blocking [user generated content] and users".

Apple's requirement has nothing to do with users blocking each other, but for the platforms to be able to block abusers.

In the two days since news broke on X that one of his users had been sentenced to death for daring to engage on free speech on the platform, Elon Musk has remained silent on the issue.

Blue-tick scammers target consumers who complain on X

Andrew Thomas was contacted by a scam account after posting a complaint to the travel platform Booking.com. “I’d been trying since April to get a refund after our holiday flights were cancelled and finally resorted to X,” he said.

“I received a response asking me to follow them, and DM [direct message] them with a contact number. They then called me via WhatsApp asking for my reference number so they could investigate. Later they called back to say that I would be refunded via their payment partner for which I’d need to download an app.”

Thomas became suspicious and checked the X profile. “It looked like the real thing, but I noticed that there was an unexpected hyphen in the Twitter handle and that it had only joined X in July 2023,” he said.

“I then checked the WhatsApp caller ID and found it was a Kenyan number. I’ve since come across other fake Booking.com Twitter accounts which are following customers who are at their wits’ end trying to get a refund and have resorted to X to air their grievance with the company.”
