Judge Schooled by Clerk Over Defense of Confederate Monuments

In an email sent circuit-wide, Judge Laurence Silberman attacked Sen. Elizabeth Warren for her recent proposal on renaming Confederate monuments.

The interview Silberman referenced was part of a series of chats judges do, open only to court staff. Silberman went on to explain that his great-grandfather had fought for the Union as part of Ulysses S. Grant’s army and was badly wounded at Shiloh, Tennessee. His great-grandfather’s brother, meanwhile, joined the Confederate States Army and was captured at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. “It’s important to remember that Lincoln did not fight the war to free the Slaves Indeed he was willing to put up with slavery if the Confederate States Returned,” he wrote (lack of punctuation and errant capitalization in the original, and throughout). “My great great grandfather Never owned slaves as best I can tell.”

But then,

“Hi Judge Silberman,” began the career-risking reply-all email, “I am one of only five black law clerks in this entire circuit. However, the views I express below are solely my own,” they went on. “Since no one in the court’s leadership has responded to your message, I thought I would give it a try.”

The statues of Civil War Democrats are being taken down now. They are of course Southern Democrats and they include Jefferson Davis . What this person is missing is after the Whig party went away. There were only Democrats and the New Republican party. The Democratic Party split into two in 1860 due to the issue of slavery. So if you want to tear down a Democratic statue, go for it! There are many quality statues of traitors and racists to choose.

Glad to see the spirit of free speech is still alive on these forums, as long as it's politically correct. If you have a library of history books their value has recently gone through the roof, especially ones written before the 70s or 80s when the left started to make major progress in rewriting them. Tearing down the statues, especially the one related to Lincoln paid for by freed slaves, is akin to burning books and you know what they say, where they burn books, they will ultimately burn people.

Thats the idea, when you hear things you don't agree with put it on ignore and pretend you're hard of hearing. When I see something I think is evil I fight back, which is usually the response from liberals when they're uncomfortable with a differing point of view. Fighting causes stress and if you don't want it thats fine but it would be nice if people can have civil conversation with less emotion.
