Ugh, that is misusing their influence. Most likely they are bluffing but I would not want to find out otherwise.
It's like I told Troy. Let them go. But all that land and all those fancy fugly buildings are forfeit. They don't get to sell them. You have to play hardball. And if they do leave, there are plenty of other large corps that would be happy to take over the properties.

It would be nice if you can do it but why would they lose the buildings?

I came from a factory town. When the mill (singular) up and died it took awhile for someone else to move in. If the town would wind up with the property it would not hurt to have feelers out there.

The buildings are attached to the property. The only way to separate them is to demolish the buildings. That requires permits from the city of Beaverton, which can be denied.

Although if they move they still own the property, right? Only a fool would just abandon it, at worst they would sell it cheep to someone.

You must have missed seeing the word "forfeit". In other words, they lose it and the city takes it back. No one is abandoning anything. The land and buildings (with fixtures, not furniture) are confiscated.

Pretty sure that would be found unconstitutional because corporations are people so the 4th amendment applies.

(note that poor folks paying bills with cash aren't people, so still have to worry about civil forfeiture)

It depends on the terms. If it is a matter of 'you can not leave, we will take your stuff' yes, you are right. If it is a condition of their original getting a break on taxes or whatever than they would forfeit.

The fine for each violation after the first is $300,000. How often that violation is given isn't clear to me. If it's once a year though and considering these are companies listed on the stock exchange, they might just say "whatever" and pay the fine.

i've been reading and trying to figure out how rich people think it's completely different from everyone else..

Fines mean nothing when your rich.

"you can't park there"
"Nah bro, it just cost 150 dollars"

law: requires 40 hours work week to get benefits..
Business: Makes everyone work 39 hours

Law: Make wages 15 dollars an hour
Business: Fire a couple of them and make the others work longer
or Automate some jobs and contract others.

Law: requires to have woman on board.
Business: Finds woman who they can pay for next to nothing to sit and look pretty during board meetings
" Hey look we are covering the requirement..."

" Shes also on the board of all these other companies that we made up and shovel money though to look legit..."

They will find a loophole and if they can't they will pay for someone to do the research to find it or make it..

Yeah, that's pretty much what it would come down to.

Imminent Domain; City of Daytona beach took my great grandmother's house [and all the other houses around her] to put up the stupid civic center. Sure, they got paid, but nothing near what the land was actually worth.

Not to mention, people forfeit their properties, so why can't a business; you know, since they're people too.

Good.

That's the literal entire purpose of law as a concept. To push society into a direction that we want but can't get to voluntarily. Companies aren't going to do this shit on their own so fuck it pass a law.
