I wish I never met Harlan Ellison.

I didn't particularly want to meet Harlan Ellison, so I can't claim "be careful what you wish for." However, I did meet Ellison back when I was in college at one of the SF conventions regularly held in Texas. So I was probably 18 or 19 myself.

He left an indelible impression as one of the most rude, crude and casually vicious people I've personally met. He held court in his hotel room while he was in bed, stark naked beneath the sheets and cuddling with his girlfriend. I was minding my own business, just hanging with my friends who wanted to be there, when he lobbed a homophobic "quip" about my appearance. We're talking 1970s, so very uncool to do that, not to mention I was young, confused, and barely out to myself.

I was also totally unsupported in my view of his character. None of my friends even questioned his behavior, any of it. They were all dazzled by his fame and his narcissistic bad boy persona. Looking back, I can see that was a keystone moment (even if I dimly understood it at the time), that SF fandom would not be a safe harbor for my nerdom. I was on my own.

Trump’s lawyers asked the Republican National Committee, the National Republican Congressional Committee and the National Republican Senatorial Committee to stop using the ex president’s name and likeness in fundraising appeals and merchandise.
