On Monday, Barr told ITV News that he was “sad to see but not surprised” by the pro-Trump insurrection on January 6, asserting that loss of faith in the elections was “the thing that precipitated” the violence.

“I don’t know if I’d use the word ‘inevitable,’ but I think that when you start suppressing free speech, when people lose confidence in the media, and also when they lose faith in the integrity of elections, you are going to have some people resort to violence,” Barr said.

However, the ex-attorney general refused to mentioned President Donald Trump, who persistently regurgitated lies about election fraud and was the one who incited his supporters to attack the Capitol on the basis of those lies, by name.

“I’ll leave it to the people who are looking into the genesis of this to say whether incitement was involved,” Barr said.

Then again, it will be interesting to see who remains relevant after Trump is gone. Comedy music has been pure politics for the last 4 years. I'm thinking that will change now. I wonder if and hope that pointing out the lies (of all politicians) will finally be done more by all respected media. It’s probably what’s been the most infuriating throughout all of this.

Trump never lashed out at me that whole time. (He did block me on Twitter in 2017.) And unlike aides to other politicians I've fact checked, Trump's White House underlings never got in touch to try to scold me or to spin me out of a finding that he had been inaccurate.

I thought this was telling.

Whatever the Trump officials said publicly, they likely knew, too, that Trump lied a whole lot. They also knew that, whatever some guy wrote for a Canadian paper or said on CNN, they could get his lies to his base unchallenged through social media and friendly outlets like Fox News, One America News and Breitbart.

Maybe my most disturbing experience on this beat was a trip to Trump-friendly towns in Ohio in 2017. I went to ask his supporters whether they knew he was lying. A bunch of them didn't. Even worse, a bunch of them did -- and told me they liked the lying because it was agitating Washington elites like me.
